ICC World Cup 2019: Wasim Akram Slams Pakistan Batsmen For Poor Display vs West Indies
Former Pakistan skipper and legendary cricketer Wasim Akram was not happy with the way Pakistan batsmen approached the game against West Indies. Pakistan was all out for just 105 runs in their opening game.
The shot selection has been very poor by the batsmen. And the fact that majority of their batsmen were unable to tackle short pitch deliveries. This will be their major concern heading into their next game in the World Cup.
On the other hand, their bowlers looked out of sorts apart from Mohammad Amir. They could not inflict the same damage like their counter parts on the day. Even though, Pakistan lost the game, they still have plenty of time to gather themselves and play well to reach semi finals.
Speaking of their poor batting, Wasim Akram pointed out Pakistan’s home venues at Sharjah and Dubai. Both the wickets are pretty flat and batting friendly and did not test their players as the bounce is also low.
Middle Order Lacked Application
West Indies came up with short balls and Pakistan had no answers. After losing couple of wickets early, the middle order lacked application. This ensured that wickets fell in regular intervals and no momentum was built in their innings.
“We have been playing on flat wickets of Sharjah and Dubai for years and that’s why we struggle when we get short balls on wickets like this. Today the batting shortcomings were exposed, everyone has seen the match and people now know exactly where to bowl to Pakistani batsmen.
“After losing two initial wickets, players had to stay on wickets but they couldn’t. They must learn how to stay on wicket and seeing off the ball. In such conditions, you have to survive initial overs,” he said.
Hasan Ali was under the scanner for his reckless shot. He came at No. 9 and was supposed to hang around but his shot selection was question. But Wasim Akram was quick to back the player. He insisted that he should not be only player that should be blamed.
“It looked like that he was chicken-hearted, when there was a set player at the other end then his job was to stay and rotate strike back to him there was not any need to slog and lose the wicket,” Akram further added.
Pakistan have to forget their loss against West Indies and quickly be composed for their next game. The team will now take on hosts England on Monday at the same venue. But they should be focused and not be light hearted as they have arguably the hottest favorite England playing against them cometh Monday.
