ICC World Test Championship – Here Is How A Defeat Against England Could Derail India’s WTC Campaign

Both India and England will have their eyes on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Points Table when they lock horns in the upcoming Test at Edgbaston.

India and England will resume their Test rivalry this week when they take on each other in the much-anticipated Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The match is a part of last year’s five-match series that had to be postponed after the fourth game due to a Covid-19 breakout in the Indian camp.

India are currently leading the series 2-1 and need just a draw in the upcoming game to seal the series. The visitors have not won a Test series in England since 2007. But while a draw will be enough for the team to clinch the series, it could derail their campaign in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship.

So as India gear up for the upcoming Test, we take a look at how a win, draw or loss would affect the team’s campaign in the ICC World Test Championship:

ICC World Test Championship points table:

Here is the present points table:

Team Number of series played Points PCT (%)
Australia 2 72 75
South Africa 3 60 71.43
India 4* 77 58.33
Sri Lanka 3 40 55.56
Pakistan 3 44 52.38
West Indies 4 54 50
England 5* 52 28.89
New Zealand 4 28 25.93
Bangladesh 5 16 13.33

Team India in WTC:

As of now, Team India are placed third in the WTC points table after playing 11 matches. Australia are at the top of the standings followed by South Africa. India will play seven more Tests in the ongoing WTC – the upcoming one Test against England, four against Australia at home and two away against Bangladesh.

If they go on to win all the matches, the maximum points percentage they will reach is 74.53. That should be enough for them to make it to the final since Australia would lose points when they lose to India. However, one loss in the remaining seven games could prove costly for India.

One loss means India would end up with a percentage of 68.98 and losing two would leave them on 63.42. In such a scenario, making it to the final will be very tough. So, there will be a lot at stake when India lock horns against England at Edgbaston.
