IND vs NZ 2017, 1st ODI: Twitter Reacts as New Zealand Beat India by 6 Wickets in Mumbai
Oct 22, 2017 at 10:14 PM
Ross Taylor and Tom Latham starred with the bat as New Zealand stunned India by seven wickets in the first One-Day International at the Wankhede Stadium to go one nil up in the three-match series.
Latham remained unbeaten on 103 while Taylor scored 95 to help the Kiwis start the series on a good note. Chasing a competitive 281, New Zealand were off to a decent start with Colin Munro and Martin Guptill adding 48 runs for the first wicket before Hardik Pandya dismissed the former one. India then pulled things back by reducing the visitors to 80 for three. However, India’s hopes of making further inroads into the game by Ross Taylor and Tom Latham got quashed.
Both the players had scored centuries in the warm-up game and continued their form in the first ODI too, sharing a match-winning stand of 200 runs before Bumrah dismissed Taylor with his team needing just one.
Batting first, India rode on a sublime century from Virat Kohli to post a challenging 280 for eight despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Virat Kohli’s decision to bat first seemed to have backfired when both the openers – Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan – departed with only 29 runs on the board. A 42-run stand between Kohli and Kedar Jadhav then steadied the ship before the latter got dismissed.
Dinesh Karthik and Kohli then took the inning forward but just when it seemed the duo had got their eyes set; the former was sent back by Tim Southee. Another fifty-plus stand between Kohli and his predecessor MS Dhoni steadied the ship, but the Men in Blue lost yet another wicket at a crucial juncture.
However, Kohli stood firm from one end and scored 121 to guide the team to a good total.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the game:
Change in order and Tom Latham delivers. Good. Sets up the series.

Big roar for Latham when he reaches his century. Makes me so proud of Mumbai cricket fans.

Bhuvi and Bumrah are the most reliable fast bowling pair for limited overs but at times like these you can do with a hussler like Umesh.

Jadhav is as bad as Ramesh Powar in the field.

200th game, 31st century. Tremendous class. Pleasure watching Kohli become the giant he now is.

Will remember this 121 from Kohli for a long time…..

In this Indian batting line up, only Virat Kohli looks to apply himself when the bowlers are on top. #IndvNZ

New Zealand not out of it yet. Williamson takes gr8 catch to get rid off Pandya, India may not get expected 300 runs. Could be a tight game

Saw skill of @imVkohli on football field last week; would like to see him on the tennis court, after that double-handed whip across court

One chance apart, this has been a superb century by @imVkohli. His 31st in his just 200 matches. Gosh!

Another day, another Virat Kohli century. India never lost in ODIs whenever he scored a 100 as captain. Huge challenge awaits NZ. #Virat200

Lack of temperament has always been Dinesh Karthik's problem at the highest level.

This is what happens when you face Arjun Tendulkar in the nets and Trent Boult in the match! 😂 #INDvNZ

Number four position in Indian team is like Newspaper someone buys on Indian train. Everyone is having it for some time. #INDvNZ

Piss poor innings from Rohit Sharma. Felt like he was under the misconception that its another IPL game at Wankhede. #IndvNZ

Schizophrenic knock by @ImRo45. Subdued start, two thrilling sixes, then sudden rush of blood and wicket thrown away. Trouble…

Dhawan got out, no one gives a damn here. Crowd is Kohli , KOHLI! #Virat200 #INDvNZ

India don't play a new-ball left-arm pacer that regularly and it is showing, a pattern is forming. Amir, Behrendorff and now Boult.

Well played @RossLTaylor Darji ji . Great effort after handling the pressure of Diwali orders .#indvsnz
