IND vs NZ 2017: Virat Kohli Hits Out at Critics for Targeting MS Dhoni

India skipper Virat Kohli has backed his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the level of criticism the 36-year old is facing at the moment. MS Dhoni had drawn a lot of attention after his poor showing during the second T20I against New Zealand when he scored a mere 17 runs in his first 20 balls when the asking rate was above 12.

However, he finished the innings scoring 49 runs from 37 balls. But former cricketers like Ajit Agarkar, VVS Laxman have asked Dhoni to consider his future in the shortest format while former captain Sourav Ganguly remained sceptical about his playing days.

But Virat was quick to Dhoni’s rescue, as the Delhi born captain pointed out that Dhoni was in good form while playing against Australia and Sri Lanka.

“I don’t understand why people are pointing him out. If I fail as a batsman three times, no one is going to point fingers at me because I am not over 35. The guy is fit; he is passing all the tests. He is contributing to the team in every tactical way on the field. With the bat, he did really well against Sri Lanka and Australia,” said Kohli while interacting with the media in the post-match press conference.

The 29-year old also pointed out that Dhoni did not have enough batting time in the series against New Zealand. Also, he lashed out at the critics saying they are only concerned about Dhoni while other batsmen like Pandya have also failed in this series.

“In this series, he didn’t get much time to bat. You have to understand that the position he comes in to bat, even Hardik Pandya could not score in that game so why are we pointing out one man. Hardik as well got out in the last T20 in Rajkot. You are conveniently targeting one man which is not fair,” Virat said.

Dhoni has lost his ability to handle the pressure at the moment which is drawing criticism. But the 36-year old is one of the leading runs scores for India in limited-overs formats since the start of the year. It remains to be seen if Dhoni can deliver in the coming months especially in the T20 format with his ODI record looking quite impressive.
