IND vs SA 2022: Whenever I Get My Opportunity, I Have To Prove Myself Or Do Well For The Team: Ishan Kishan

IND vs SA 2022: Ishan Kishan slammed a brilliant 76 off 48 balls in the first T20I against South Africa but the visitors secured a seven-wicket win in Delhi. Ishan Kishan started slowly with two of his first three boundaries coming from thick outside edges. He was beaten as many as five times in the first 5 overs of India’s innings but he did not throw it away.

Ishan Kishan had smashed 76 off 48 balls to give India the perfect platform on which Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant would weave their magic to the hosts to 211 for 4 batting first in the first T20I against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen put on a show, taking full advantage of the improving conditions in the second innings to lift South Africa to a 7-wicket win.

Ishan Kishan Thinks Rohit Sharma And KL Rahul Are World Class Players And Can’t Be Dropped But He Would Want To Prove Himself If Given An Opportunity

India’s death bowlers may have been disappointing in the 1st T20I but Ishan Kishan, however, would remain one of India’s biggest positives. Despite knowing that he will have to sit out when regular openers Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul return to open the innings, the left-hander put his best foot forward.

“I think they (Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul) are world-class players and I won’t ask for my support when they are there in the team. So my job here is to give my best in the practice session. Whenever I get my opportunity, I have to prove myself or do well for the team. So I focus more than that about my process about what I have to do here,” Ishan said in the post-match press conference on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Jharkhand cricketer said he will never ask the team management to pick him ahead of experienced cricketers like Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, who have done so well for the country.

“They have done so much. You know, scored so many runs for our country. I can’t ask them to drop them and make me play in the first place. Yeah I’ll keep doing my thing it’s up to selectors or other coaches whatever they think but my job is to you know just whenever I get my chance I will give my best,” Kishan added.

The 23-year-old who had an average IPL 2022 with Mumbai Indians helped India set a base for a big first-innings total, the highest in T20Is at Kotla. At the start of the innings though, runs didn’t come by smoothly for the Indian opener. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan added 51 runs during the Powerplay.

Ishan Kishan was India’s highest run-scorer on the night, scoring his third T20I fifty in his 11th outing for India. Having started the series well with the bat, with one eye on the 2022 T20I World Cup later this year, Ishan Kishan would look to extract the most from the remaining four games.

Ishan Kishan Won’t Blame An Individual For Losing The Match

Ishan Kishan refused to put the blame solely on the bowlers and said the team collectively will look to improve in all departments. Despite the batters putting up a massive 211 on the board, the Indian bowlers struggled to defend the target on what was a batting belter. The home team’s woes were compounded when Shreyas Iyer dropped a sitter off Rassie van der Dussen, who was on 29 at that point, and he went on to score an unbeaten 75.

“We need to address what mistakes we did with the bowling department or if it’s the fielding department, but it’s never any one player who, you know, makes us lose the match. So we’ll figure out everything as a team,” he said.

While Ishan Kishan sparkled with a dazzling fifty, Ruturaj Gaikwad did start well but failed to convert it into a big total as he was out for 15-ball 23. Hardik Pandya, who made his India comeback after an impressive IPL 2022, showed glimpses of his old self as he struck an unbeaten 31 off 12 with two fours and three sixes. India and South Africa will travel to Cuttack for the second match of the series slated to take place on Sunday.
