India almost pulled off an exciting victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Despite, bad weather for the first two days of the Test match, the match ended on an exciting note with the visitors escaping a loss with just three wickets in hand. The match ended due to bad light, and the Sri Lankan team breathes easy as the umpires called it a day.
Virat Kohli’s century will be one of the bright spots for the Indian team to take out from the match. Kohli has scored just two centuries since his double century knock against Bangladesh earlier this year. This was also his first century at home since the Bangladesh knock.
However, Kohli’s century was not the highlight of the day but Niroshan Dickwella’s tactics to waste time and his face-to-face confrontation with the Mohammed Shami were the talking points of the day. Dickwella on Wednesday accepted that he was trying to waste time in the final session to escape a loss as they just had three wickets in hand.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli in a press conference on Thursday also admitted that even he would have done anything to help his side win or a draw a match. Kohli said:
“I like to see that competition on the field. In the heat of things or in that moment, I would do anything for my team to win but afterwards we had a normal chat and in the flight as well. Those things end on the field but when you are competitive as an opponent, we always respect that about any opponent.”
The match ended in a draw which could have easily gone in India’s favor but the Indian skipper said that he had no issues with the result of the match as the fading light was something which was not in their hands. The two teams will now face each other in the second Test match to begin from 24th November, in Nagpur.
