India has a chance to win the third Test—Ricky Ponting

Raj / 25 December 2014

Well, this kind of a favorable prediction, coming straight from none other than Ricky Ponting in favor of team India is really awesome. Hopefully, this will prove to be a big morale booster for Team India. Although team India lost the last test owing to their internal conflicts, but there are a large number of supporters who surely believe that this is the best possible team and in case everyone gives their best, it might not be difficult to beat injury prone Australia.

In an interview to ESPN, Ricky Ponting said,”If there is a game that they might win, it will be this one. With what is happening around the Australian team and the conditions here as well. The slow and flat wicket might suit them. So I will give them a little bit of chance.”

Ponting also expressed hope that if Australia continues to play like their last two brilliant tests, they can win this test also in four days time. He said, “If Australia go out there and play the brand of cricket that they have played then I find no problem in them getting the match over in four days.”

The best part of Ponting’s assessment is truly very encouraging as he has appreciated the aggressive approach adopted by the Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Normally Dhoni is known for adopting a defensive attitude in the longer version of the game but it appears that captain has realized that it will be appropriate to play aggressively to counter Australia in their backyard. Ponting, underlining the change also pointed out attacking field placements put in by Dhoni.

Ponting opined,” If ever there has been criticism of Dhoni and the Indian cricket being too defensive. But I think that he has really showed signs of some aggressive cricket and good field placements. They should be more result oriented in their way of playing. I think playing cricket in India they tend to drag the game a bit, but this sort of cricket does not work in Australia. You have to be really really proactive. They should be looking to finish the game in four days time and the teams that I have played in Australia are always looking to play a fast-paced game.”

It is a very positive development on the part of Australians that despite provocations by few of the Indian cricketers, contrary to their image, they kept their cool and replied through their performance on the field instead of sledging. In any case, this encounter is going to be the most interesting as both the teams are equally capable to win on the slow and flat pitch out there.
