“Fitness is something that I can’t tell you anything at all. The question that needs to be asked is of MSD himself. He has not made himself available to play for India since 10th of July. That is an important question. Does anybody keep himself away from playing for India for that long? That is the question and therein lies the answer,” he said after delivering the 26th Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture.

Gavaskar has always been vocal while speaking about Indian cricketers and last year as well, he had questioned their absence from the Ranji Trophy.

Dhoni hasn’t played any form of cricket since the World Cup 2019 but still, he remains to be in the scheme of things. He missed the West Indies tour in August and wasn’t available for South Africa T20Is as well. Dhoni remained absent from Bangladesh T20Is and also missed the West Indies and Sri Lanka series.

It is unlikely that he will be part of the squad for the tour of New Zealand but is still in the scheme of things for World Cup 2020. India head coach Ravi Shastri, on occasions, has said that Dhoni can make a comeback if he does well in IPL. Although he also hinted that Dhoni might take a call on his ODI career soon.

As the coach said, Dhoni’s form in IPL 2020 will play a crucial role in deciding whether he plays the World Cup. If Dhoni does well, he will be an automatic selection while the former India skipper might take a call on his career if he fails to deliver.

Dhoni will be leading Chennai Super Kings in the T20 tournament. In 2018, he led the team to a title triumph while in 2019, CSK lost a last-ball thriller to Mumbai Indians.
