After no bilateral series in the year 2018, India and Sri Lanka are likely to lock horns in a three-match T20I series in India in January next year, a report suggests. While nothing has been confirmed yet, the series will not be tough to organise for both the boards as the three matches will be wrapped up in less than a week.

The last time these two teams played in a T20I series was in 2017, when Sri Lanka toured India for a full-fledged series. Sri Lanka managed to draw two Test matches in the three-Test series and lost the series 0-1. In ODIs, they won the first match in Dharamsala but lost the next two matches to lose the ODIs 1-2.
In the T20Is, India did not give any chance to the visitors and won the series 3-0. Since then, the two teams haven’t played any bilateral series. Although India travelled to Sri Lanka for Nidahas Trophy 2018. The two teams also faced each other in the Asia Cup 2018.
Earlier in 2017 as well, India had travelled to Sri Lanka for a complete series. India defeated the hosts in three Tests, five ODIs and one T20Is. Across nine games that India played there, the visitors won all the matches.
The T20I series between India and Sri Lanka next year will be ideal preparation for both the teams. If the series happens, it will be the first time since 2016 that the two teams will play in just a T20I series. In early 2016, the teams played in three-match T20I series to prepare for T20 World Cup that was played in India.
Ironically the two teams can just play each other in limited-overs bilateral series over the next two years as they are not scheduled to take on each other in ICC Test championship.
