Patrick Cummins made his Test debut in the year 2011 and then a string of injuries kept him out of international cricket for a long time. He did make a return to the international team in between but was never a regular part of the squad. First-class cricket was something which never crossed his mind keeping in view the number of injuries he had and finally, he played a first-class game after a period of six years for New South Wales.
Before this game, he would not have thought that this game could change his fortune as he was called in the Australian squad and straightaway landed in the playing XI, replacing an injured Mitchell Starc for the Ranchi Test.
The way Cummins bowled in the game, impressed everyone including Dirk Nannes, who witnessed a fierce piece of bowling from him,
“What strikes me about Cummins is his hostility, accuracy and his variations. He uses the crease very well. He has been exceptional here,” Nannes told The Hindu here during the third Test.
“As you can see, he has a nasty short ball. And he has been able to send a lot of overs here. He’s looking fit and strong,” he added.
Nannes is also looking forward to seeing the pair of Cummins and Starc teaming up and bowling in tandem in future,
“That would be something, isn’t it? I don’t think a lot of batsmen would appreciate that. Right-arm, left-arm, both genuinely fast with a lot of bounce, there would be no respite for the batsmen. I can’t wait to see that happen.”
Nannes also praised Umesh Yadav, who as per him, is the find of the season for the Indian team. Nannes said that he has seen improvement Indian paceman from the past.
“I played with him for Delhi Daredevils but he has come on a lot since then. Previously, there used to be a jerk in his action. Now his action is a lot smoother. And he is bowling a better line too, around off. Earlier, there were times when he bowled down leg-stump.”
