India vs Australia 2017: Top Five Turning Points Of The Bangalore Test

Riding on a superb piece of bowling and gritty innings from the trio of Cheteshwar Pujara, KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane, the Indian team squared off the series in Bangalore. Despite not having a good start to the game, the home side rebounded and was able to make a comeback on rest of three days of the game to register a historic win in Bangalore.

There were many twists and turns in the game which wrote a script to India’s win.

Here are five turning points of the game –

Gritty KL Rahul – Indian team kicked off the Bangalore Test from where they left in Pune i.e. failing against visiting bowlers. Abhinav Mukund, who was making his comeback in the Test team after a period of six years was bowled by Mitchell Starc for a duck. Though Indian batsmen somehow steered the team but once again the middle order crumbled after getting a good start which one could say. Amidst all this, there was one player KL Rahul-the local boy who stood tall to ensure that Indian team eclipse short targets. Riding on his innings of 90, finally, the Indian team finished the innings with a score of 189 on the board.

KL Rahul was the star with the bat as if he wouldn’t have come up with that innings, that Indian team would ‘ve found it difficult to even touch the hundred run mark.

The Bowlers domination – Though funny faces of Ishant Sharma mocking Steve Smith are viral on social media but it is true that it was Ishant who really kept the things tight on day two of the play and did not allow Australians to get an upper hand in the game. He, along with other bowlers, kept Australians under check. Kangaroos lost six wickets on day two but it is to be noted that the visitors could only manage to score 197 runs. It was a morale-boosting effort by Indian bowlers as this day nearly lit up hopes of a comeback in the game.

KL Rahul continues his love affair, Rahane-Pujara joins – The local boy KL Rahul continued his love affair with his home ground i.e. M Chinnaswamy Stadium and went on to score another half-century in the game. But despite a good start, Indian team found itself in a tough situation as the home side was four down on a score of 120.

Then came the moment when the senior pros Chetshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, who saved the best for the rest came up with a match-winning partnership of 118 runs for the fifth wicket. Both of them stayed at the crease for almost 46 overs and kept Indian team in the game. Though Indian batting line-up faltered and was dismissed completely on day four but the partnership between these two was enough to ensure that Indian team has a defendable total on the board.

No spin, no issue, Starc-Hazlewood Shine – Pujara and Rahane provided a steady start to Indian team on day four of the game but soon Hazlewood and Starc wrecked havoc and quickly dismissed India on a score of 274. The period of two overs between 85 to 86 was game changing as India team lost four wickets withing a matter of 12 balls, which did not let the lead go past 200.

Had Starc and Hazlewood pegged back India at that time, the target could have gone past 200.

Ravichandran Ashwin spins the game – If one player who could have won the game for India was Ravichandran Ashwin and yes he did.

The all-rounder came up with a match winning spell of 12.4-4-41-6 and helped India thump Australia by a margin of 75 runs. The match-winning spell was well supported by other bowlers as well, who played an equal role in the win.

This win forced fans to dwelve back into memory lane as this win reminded us of the win against the same opposition in the year 2004 in Mumbai.

Though Australian batsmen showed some resistance but the web weaved was so strong that none of the Australia batsmen could really come up with enough needed to face the Indian bowlers.
