India vs Australia 2017: Virat Kohli Is Due For A Lot Of Runs In The Last Test, Says Adam Gilchrist

At a time, when the whole of Australia is leaving no stone unturned to criticise Virat Kohli, former Australia batsman Adam Gilchrist has heaped praise on the under-fire India skipper for his leadership skills.

Kohli has been at the receiving end of the criticism launched by the Australian media ever since he accused the Australian team of taking help from the dressing room on DRS referrals during the second Test in Bengaluru. But Gilchrist said the 28-year-old is a great leader.

He also said the Indian batsman, who has managed just 46 runs in the ongoing series, is due for a big one in the final Test in Dharamsala, starting Saturday (March 25).

“Kohli is a great leader. He drags his team and his nation with him,” Gilchirst said.

“I am fearful Virat Kohli is due for a lot of runs (in Dharamsala).”

The former player further expressed his delight over the fact that the much-talked about DRS controversy has not panned out as the infamous ‘monkeygate’ episode of 2008.

“It has been an exceptional series. (But) both the teams may sit back in the end and think they may have said somethings differently. But we can all move on and I’m glad that it has not escalated to the really nasty scenario in 2008 that dragged on and on,” he said.

“Everyone was frustrated and that is a part of history between the two teams,” he added.

“At the end of the day there is a lot of respect between the two teams because they fear each other as opponents. Both the teams are fine competitors.”

The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman, who was a part of the Australia team that won the Test series in India in 2004, said he is very surprised with the way Steven Smith’s men have performed in the series.

Before this series, the team from Down Under had endured a horrid time in the sub-continent, losing 13 of their last 17 Tests. However, the visitors have surprised everyone with their superlative performance in this series so far. In the first Test at Pune, they thrashed the hosts by 333 runs before losing the next in Bengaluru. In the third Test in Ranchi, they salvaged a hard-earned draw and would be fancying their chances of registering a historic series win in Dharamsala.

“I think it’s fair to say that everyone is surprised the way Australian team has performed over there (in India). So many predictions but they have done themselves proud. Australia has performed extremely well,” he said.

“It has been a wonderful series. So many people are saying to me it is the best series they have seen in India since 2001. That (2001) series was extraordinary and India came out on top but who knows what lays ahead,” he concluded.
