India vs Bangladesh 2017, One-Off Test: Muralitharan Was Naturally Gifted Player, Ashwin Has Developed A Skill, Says Thilan Samaraweera

Bangladesh’s batting coach, Thilan Samaraweera, has heaped praise on the Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and said that he has created a skill which is self-explanatory as he said:

“They are two different bowlers. Murali was a genuinely gifted, talented cricketer. But Ashwin is very smart and has developed a skill set which says a lot about him. He has many variations, he can change his line and length but these two are hard to compare.”

In a way, Samaraweera has rated Ashwin above Muralitharan but it is the fact of the matter that Ashwin is yet to prove his credentials outside sub-continent barring the West Indies. Ashwin surpassed the bowling legend Dennis Lillee to become the quickest bowler to reach the 250-wicket mark in Test cricket.

The former Sri Lankan player also praised the capability of Indian team to produce legends of the game on regular basis as India team is never short when it comes to talent and setting a benchmark in world cricket,

“I am the biggest believer in legacies. Like Sunil Gavaskar set the benchmark and then Sachin Tendulkar chased that. He set a higher benchmark and now Virat Kohli is chasing that. With Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh set the benchmarks, and now he is chasing that. If he plays for another seven-eight years, hopefully, he is fit, he will be in the range between 600 to 800 wickets.”

Coming to the Test match, the batting coach was wary of the fact that Bangladesh team crumbled twice in New Zealand during their second innings and he seemed pretty much concerned about that fact,

“I think the biggest concern for me is our second innings batting. We have blown away in New Zealand. Hopefully, the boys are learning. At the moment, I know a lot of areas are there for improvement but you have to understand how good these spinners are. It’s important that we have to start well first half an hour.”

Bangladesh still need a total of 356 more runs to win the one-off Test vs India.
