India vs England, 3rd ODI: Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes Guide England To 321 At Eden Gardens

After England were struggling at 246 for six in 43 overs, while having the ability to bat deep, all-rounder Ben Stokes made well settled 57 off 39 balls to set a target of 322 for India as he was equally supported by fast-bowler Chris Woakes, who played a cameo of 34 off 19 balls in the third and final One-Day International game at the jam-packed Eden Gardens.

Both the Englishmen put on 73 runs for the seventh wicket as Woakes ran himself out before Liam Plunkett also got run-out while scampering for two on the last ball of England’s innings.

However, after a perfect start for England – the hosts came back strongly in the game as their fast bowlers maintained their line and the length with Hardik Pandya bagging three wickets before spinners gave away over six runs per over while trying to keep the run-rate under check.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja bowled his full quota of 10 overs to get two crucial wickets while giving away 62 runs.

Ravichandaran Ashwin went wicket-less in nine overs by conceding 60 runs.

As the Indian skipper Virat Kohli tried with the mixed variations, Yuvraj Singh also bowled three over and conceded 17 runs.

Earlier, in the afternoon, Kohli won the toss and elected to ball first while having a remarkable season so far as a captain and batsman.

Sam Billings perished while playing a sweep shot on the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja when England’s scorecard read 98 for one.

Fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah jumped to perfection in 30-yard circle to send Billings back to pavilion on 35, which eventually put an end to a 98-run first-wicket stand between Roy and Billings.

Given this, Jadeja also completed his 150 wickets in One-Day International games.

Jason Roy was clean bowled in a similar fashion of the second ODI at Cuttack by Ravindra Jadeja when he was batting well on 65 off 56 balls.

It was the third consecutive time in the series that Jadeja got rid of Roy. England lost their second wicket on 110 in the 20th over.

In the 28th over, Jasprit Bumrah overstepped the mark when Jonny Bairstow guided the short ball straight into the hands of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, when England were 152 for two in 28.3 Overs.

In 34th over, Hardik Pandya brought some respite for India as England captain Eoin Morgan returned to pavilion by giving an easiest catch to Bumrah at short fine-leg before setting the partnership of 84 for the third wicket with Bairstow. Morgan scored 43 off 44 balls.

On the bowling of Pandya in the 38th over, Bairstow was given out by an umpire, but the wicket-keeper batsman did not waste the time by asking for a review. The replays showed the ball brushed his trouser when he was batting on 46.

Following the drama, in the very same over of Pandya, Jos Buttler gave a simple catch to KL Rahul at cover region when he was batting on 11 off 15 balls.

Bairstow (56 off 64 balls), who looked threatened, had guided a ball straight into the hands of Jadeja, who took a brilliant low catch in the 42nd over to see England at 237 for five.

Moeen Ali was undone by Bumrah on a short delivery while scoring just two off five balls when the score was 246.

The Replacements:

Shikhar Dhawan, who was struggling to find the form, was replaced by top order batsman Ajinkya Rahane.

However, the visitors suffered a massive blow in the form of Joe Root who was ruled out due to a little niggle.
