India vs England, 5th Test: Ravindra Jadeja’s Seven Humiliates England As India Seal Historic 4-0 Win

India’s left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja ran riot as he claimed his career best figures of 7/48 in the second innings of Chennai Test to beat England by an innings and 75 runs. With this, India completed a 4-0 win over the visitors in the five-match Test series and maintained their unbeaten streak to 18-0 under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

Fifth day of the Chennai Test was all England was waiting for after suffering humiliation in Tests series until Tuesday. The day proceeded with visitors putting hard steps onto to the field to avoid another loss and finish their so called torrid tour on a high. Contributing to the cause, openers Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook put up a gallant hundred run partnership for the first wicket. Just before England could settle themselves down, Jadeja scalped Cook for the sixth time in the series on 49. A poor shot rather saw the captain walking back in complete disarray. Jennings couldn’t stick around for longer as Jadeja hunt him down too on 54.

Joe Root, England’s most reliable batsman in the series, was left amused after playing a poor shot to Jadeja, adjudged to an LBW decision after a review. England who started off well, were dragged back on the same track that has been haunting them from the outset. With Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow at the crease, England had a slim hope of seizing the remaining two sessions.

Bairstow, who seemed to have lost his midas touch, became Umesh Yadav’s first victim of the innings, thanks to an incredible catch by Ravindra Jadeja standing in deep-mid wicket position. From 103 for zero to 129 for four, England were just starring at a series loss.

Standing tall on the other end, Moeen Ali wasn’t much bothered initially but he was undone by a turning delivery from Jadeja, who picked him up for 44. Ben Stokes, who provided slight resurgence, glanced one to Murali Vijay at mid-wicket for 23, granting Jadeja his first fifer of the series. Things were just going to be bad for England from then onwards. As the Indian skipper asked for the new ball, Umesh Yadav then got rid-off Adil Rashid on the very next moment.

With just two wickets away from a historic win, Virat Kohli continued to disappoint with his DRS review calling, making a huge mistake of going for one, bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin to Broad, which after pitching appeared to have missed the stumps completely.

DRS shows the ball would have missed the stumps completely.

The left-arm spinner then picked up Broad and Jake Ball in successive overs to complete his seven-wicket haul in Tests, his first in his career. It was over, as India’s most dominant performance against England sealed them the match and the series. Virat Kohli was ecstatic and so was the entire Indian team. Smiles were seen all around the ground as crowd cheered for the hosts for their massive victory.

For his maiden triple hundred, Karun Nair was adjudged as the Player-of-the-Match while Virat Kohli was bestowed as the Man-of-the-Series for scoring 655 runs in five matches.
