India vs New Zealand 2nd ODI: Twitter Reacts As India Level Series With Convincing Win
Jan 9, 2019 at 3:53 PM
Bouncing back in style after the defeat in the series-opener, Team India thrashed New Zealand by six wickets in the second One-Day International in Pune to level the three-match series 1-1. After Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 3-fer helped India restrict the visitors to a small total, Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik’s fifties took the Men in Blue over the line in the do-or-die game.
Chasing a modest 231, India were off to a poor start once again after Tim Southee dismissed Rohit Sharma for just 7. However, New Zealand could not make further inroads in the game as Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli added 55 runs for the second wicket to set the tone for the chase before the latter perished for 29.
Another 55-plus stand between Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik put India firmly in command of the proceedings. The partnership came to an end when Dhawan offered an easy catch to Ross Taylor off Adam Milne after scoring 68. India then all but sealed the game in their favour when Karthik and Hardik Pandya shared a 59-run partnership. Karthik and MS Dhoni then did the rest by taking the team home with four overs remaining.
Earlier, losing wickets at regular intervals did not allow the visitors to put up a challenging total. New Zealand’s top three once again failed to fire as they were reeling at 27 for 3 when the seventh over ended. Last match’s heroes- Tom Latham and Ross Taylor then tried to rescue their side once again, but Hardik Pandya crushed their attempt by sending back the latter.
Video of the day:
A 60-run stand between Latham and Henry Nicholls then stopped the rot for a while, but the Kiwis suffered a huge setback when Axar Patel dismissed the former to reduce them to 118 for 5. New Zealand kept on losing a wicket at regular interval and at one time it was looking tough for them to cross even the 200-run mark when they were reduced to 188 for 8. However, a 32-run stand between Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner helped them finish their innings on a respectable 230 for 9.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the game:
While we watch the development of Hardik Pandya with much interest, I must admit to be being perplexed by Dhoni being dropped down the order

Delighted for Dinesh Karthik. Carrying his form in domestic cricket into international cricket. Brave, encouraging selection

Kohli has 8888 runs at an average of 55.55 after 200 games. He is at a beautifully symmetric point of his career right now.

What a soft dismissal. Rohit too bored in a small chase.

Probably 4 of the best ODI pace bowlers playing in this series. Boult and Southee are very good , Bhuvi and Bumrah are exceptional.#INDvNZ

Good day for India with the ball after an off day in Mumbai. New Zealand way below where they would have liked to be

Kiwis have scrambled past 200 against fine bowling by India. But pitch hasnt looked like 330+ track disgraced curator Salgaokar predicted
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 25, 2017
Shocked! What has happened to this world! Curator lied even after taking money. Par score of 337 doesn't seem possible. #IndvNz

This is now an outstanding opening spell, another outstanding opening spell dare I say, from Bhuvaneswar and Bumrah.

Good strategy by New Zealand to lose early wickets and let two inform batsmen face more and more deliveries. #INDvNZ
