Indian cricket team players want Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team, a report in NDTV suggests.
Shastri, who recently applied for the post of Head Coach of the Indian cricket is the red hot favourite candidate of the players for the post. With players already backing the former Indian all-rounder, there is a strong case when Shastri wins the race and is appointed as the new head coach of Men in Blue.
Though, he has a stiff competition from Virender Sehwag, who was asked by Indian skipper Virat Kohli himself to apply for the vacant post. However, with Shastri too in the race, it has created difficulties for BCCI and Kohli, as it was learned that Kohli asked Sehwag to apply at that time as Shastri was not ready to apply for the post due to the presence of Anil Kumble at the helm.
Soon Kumble resigned after team India’s loss to Pakistan in the final of ICC Champions Trophy citing untenable relation with the skipper. (Read Here: BCCI Team Manager Submits Report On Kohli-Kumble Tussle)
Within a week, BCCI extended the deadline to apply for the post of Head Coach to July 9 and then Shastri was quick to apply for it, forecasting a strong case for himself to be back in the dressing room.
Shastri shares a good rapport with the Indian skipper which will be very much helpful for him but underweighting Sehwag would be a big mistake. Also, there are still five days left to apply for the job and if a big personality applies, then it can come as an upset for Shastri, just like last year where he was quite confident of wearing the Head Coach hat but as soon as Kumble threw his hat in the ring, Shastri lagged behind in the race and was left empty-handed.
It also led to a controversy between Shastri and Sourav Ganguly. (Read Here: CAC To Conduct Interview For Head Coach On July 10)
This time again, Shastri is pretty much confident of getting the job and in case there is an upset this time, then Shastri might never ever apply for the job again.
Meanwhile, Phil Simmons has recently jumped in the race to the Head Coach. He has coached sides like Ireland, Zimbabwe and Windies in past. Also, the Caribbean team won the 2016 T20 World Cup under his tutelage.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI will conduct the interview for the new Head Coach on July 10 and the incoming person will travel to Sri Lanka with team India for a full-fledged series.
