From 2011 to 2017, R Ashwin remained to be India’s frontline spinner across formats. On occasions, he was kept out of the playing XI but didn’t have to worry much about his place. Former India captain MS Dhoni backed him to the hilt and Ashwin always came back stronger. In 2017, Dhoni’s decision to step down as limited-overs captain effectively ended Ashwin’s white-ball career. He hasn’t played a white-ball game since July 2017.

Virat Kohli has been backing wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal since then. Ravindra Jadeja has returned but he has much more to offer than just off-spin.
