Indian squad for the three match Test series between Sri Lanka has been announced. The selection committee headed by former India cricketer Sandip Patil did not take any chances in picking the squad as they persisted with the same team that toured Bangladesh last month. Virat Kohli will lead the Test team and his deputy is yet to be known but as per the things that take place on the field, it must be either Rohit Sharma or Ajinkya Rahane who must be the deputy to Virat.
The 15 member squad consists of seven batsmen, seven bowlers and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha. In-form opener Murali Vijay will be a definite starter in the team with either Shikhar Dhawan or KL Rahul accompanying at the top. Rahul was the first choice to open with Vijay as he did well in the Australian tour where he scored a ton at the SCG in the fourth Test but unfortunately had to miss the lone Test against Bangladesh due to illness in which Shikhar Dhawan replaced him and grabbed the opportunity with both the hands by scoring 173. Skipper Kohli will have a tough job in choosing the right man to open with Vijay.
Another concern for Kohli will be the number 3 batsmen and it will be toss-up between Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara. Pujara has been mediocre in the past one year with the bat and that prompted Kohli to drop him and include Rohit in his place for the Sydney Test. Rohit was decent in the Test and kept his place for the Bangladesh Test where he scored just 6. Kohli will more likely give Rohit a full series to bat at three before coming to a decision. Apart from these batsmen, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane complete the batsmen’s quota.
Among the bowlers, R Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron pick themselves along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Karn Sharma being their back-up. India play Sri Lanka in a three match Test series that begins on August 12.
