SL v India 2017: Rohit, KL Rahul Back As Selectors Drop Yuvraj, Karthik From Limited Over Squad

Rishav Narang / 13 August 2017

The MSK Prasad-led selection committee announced the Indian limited overs squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Prasad chaired the meeting from Pallekele, where he is currently with the Indian cricket team. Devang Gandhi attended the meeting from South Africa whereas Sarandeep Singh marked his attendance from Delhi.

There were changes in the side as the selectors dropped an underperforming Yuvraj Singh from the side whereas Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pnat were swapped to give a place to the regulars, who missed out due to respective injuries.

KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Axar Patel made their comebacks after recovering from injuries. While Rahul has already played in the Test series both Pandey and Axar were sent to South Africa with the ‘A’ side to prove their fitness so as to make a comeback in the team. There were two surprising names in the side in form of Shardul Thakur and Yuzvendra Chahal. Both of them replaced regulars in the side, who have been rested keeping in mind the long home season which awaits team India.

There were two comebacks in form of Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. Both of them were part of India ODI squad for ICC Champions Trophy whereas but rested for the series against Windies.

Surprisingly, there was no place for Suresh Raina in the team. He was expected to be in the side as he appeared for a fitness test in NCA but he lost the race to likes of Kedar Jadhav and Manish Pandey.

Selector announced a common squad for both the series, which was the prime reason behind Rishabh Pant not getting a place in the side as there was no point in selecting two different sides when there was only T20I in the series.

The first ODI of the series will be played on August 20 at Rangiri Dambulla Stadium in Dambulla, followed by two ODIs in Pallekele and two in Colombo. A lone T20I in Colombo will mark an end to team India’s one and a half month stay in Sri Lanka. After the conclusion of the series, team India is scheduled to play more than 20 games at home with one complete series against Sri Lanka as well, who will be travelling to the country for three match Test, ODI and T20I series.

At present, the Virat Kohli led side leads the Test series by a margin of 2-0, with the third Test game in progress in Pallekele.
