Twenty20 format produce some exciting entertainment of cricket. And some tournaments have kept the excitement of full flow. World T20, Indian Premier League and Champions League T20 have gained a good reputation among them. Net Run rate has played a crucial role in the tournament for qualification for furtherer round.

Here are some matches played with NRR-factor and produced excitement and teams winning them went farer rounds.

World T20 2007 – South Africa vs India:

The final Super 8’s game of the tournament was played between India and South Africa of Group E, where India needed a win to qualify for semis and South Africa needed to make sure not to lose by more than 27 runs and end up with lower NRR than New Zealand.

India who batted first posted 153/5 with help of Rohit Sharma’s fifty and good innings from MS Dhoni. Later South Africa needed 126 to qualify for semis. But they went down for 27/5 at a stage. However, Boucher and Morkel rescued them taking towards the needed score. With 26 needing off 20 to qualify SA collapsed and ended with 116, 10 runs short of what was needed and got knocked out.

World T20 2010 – India vs Sri Lanka:

India faced Sri Lanka in Group F encounter of Super 8’s of 2010 WT20 tournament. India needed a win with 20 runs or more and depend on a result between Aus-WI match. Sri Lanka also needed the Aus-WI game like India but have to make sure they don’t lose more than 19 runs.

India batted first and were in a commanding position at 90/1. But later dropped down and ended up at 163/4. Which means they need to restrict SL to 143 or below. India started well in the process but towards the end gave it up and SL crossed the barrier and in the end took the game away from India. Even though the other result came in favour, India got knocked out due to their game against SL.

Champions League T20 2010 – Chennai Super Kings vs Warriors:

In group stage of tournament CSK faced Warriors in a deciding match where CSK need a win to qualify and other hand Warriors needed not to lose by more than 27 runs.

On a slow track CSK managed to score 136/6 with help of contributions from Hussey, Vijay and Badrinath. Later Warriors needed 109 to qualify. But a stage they looked to win but in the end they crossed their barrier and ended up 10 runs short of target. Later these both teams went on to meat in finals.

World T20 – India vs South Africa:

The final Super 8’s game of the tournament was played between India and South Africa of Group 2, where India needed a win to qualify for semis that too more than 30 runs and end up with higher NRR than Pakistan. On other hand South Africa was already exited.

India who batted first posted 152/6 with help of some contributions from middle order. Later India needed to restrict South Africa to 121 or below to qualify for semis. But a Fantastic innings from Faf du Plessis took away India’s hope and almost the match but India managed to win it by one run but got knocked out.

Champions League T20 2011 – Chennai Super Kings vs New South Wales Blues:

In a crucial game that decides the semi-final spot, CSK faced NSW in a group stage game. CSK needed a win that to by a margin of above 37 runs. On other hand NSW needed just a win to qualify. T&T in the same group need a normal CSK win for them to qualify.

But David Warner came out to break all the expectations as he scored an unbeaten 135 in his team’s total of 201/3. Which meant CSK needed to chase in 17 overs and T&T need CSK just to chase the total. But Chennai under pressure kept losing wickets and got bowled out for 155, which made New South Wales to qualify for next round.

Champions League T20 2013 – Mumbai Indians vs Perth Scorchers:

Mumbai Indians faced Perth Scorchers in a game which must be won comprehensively to be in semis over a team playing for pride in group stage. MI needed a 60 run win to get over Otago Volts NRR.

Perth Scorchers started slowly but with help of some hitting Whiteman they got to a score of 149/6. Mumbai needed to chase it down in 14.2 overs to enter semis. And MI fought well as they got some good start from Smith and was continued by Rohit Sharma, the captain of MI team who scored a 24 ball 51 and in the end Pollard and Rayudu seen their team chase the total in 13.2 overs, an over earlier than what was required. Later Mumbai Indians stood as champions of the tournament.

World T20 2014 – Netherlands vs Ireland:

In a qualifier game which guides to the main tournament of World T20, Ireland need a win to qualify and Netherlands needed a huge win to get over Zimbabwe’s NRR who are in same Group B.

Ireland batted first and with help of Porterfield, Poynter and Kevin O’Brian they put on a big total of 189/4. And the target was needed to be chased down in 14.2 over by Netherland for them to qualify.

Holland got off to brilliant start with their openers putting 91 for first wicket in powerplay overs. Myburgh scored the 2nd fastest 50 in T20I cricket. Later Tom Copper’s onslaught of hitting biggies took them close to the required barrier. But Barresi stood till the end and guided them to a empathic win in just 13.5 overs, 3 balls less than needed.

Indian Premier League 2014 – Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad:

Kolkata Knight Riders needed a 40 odd run win margin to end in top 2 off the table and Sunrisers needed a minimum win of 80 runs to be in playoffs race.

SRH who batted first scored 160/8 with some contributions from their batsmen. KKR needed to chase it in 15.2 overs to end in top 2 to get an extra opportunity to qualify for finals.

KKR started as per the normal required rate and were 84/4 at halfway stage. They needed another 77 in 32 balls and Yusuf Pathan came out all guns blazing smashing everyone and scored fastest 50 on IPL off 15 balls and got out for a 22 ball 72. Later the next batsman completed the task with in 14.2 overs if self.
