Gujarat Lions vs Delhi Daredevils – Under 19 star creates a record

Gujarat Lions are on top of the table right with 6 wins in 8 matches. Daredevils on the other hand in 4th position with 4 wins in 6 matches. Daredevils are coming into this match with a home win against KKR and Lions lost their previous match to KXIP.

Zaheer Khan won the toss and chose to field. Gujarat Lions had one of the most destructive Top 4 today with Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum opening and Aaron Smith and Raina coming in at No. 3 and 4. Zaheer Khan himself provided the early breakthrough as he got another left-hander out in the form of Brendon McCullum and spinners picked up next 3 wickets in quick succession. Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja did some damage control and in the end took the team score to a respectable 149/7 in 20 overs.

Coming into the chase, there was a change in openers as Rishabh Pant took the strike with de Kock for the Daredevils. Pant who rose to fame in the U19 World Cup got a chance to prove himself and he did exactly that as both openers scored 61 runs in the powerplay, without losing a wicket. They put up a stand of 115 runs before Jadeja got the breakthrough but it was too late by then. Delhi Daredevils won by 8 wickets with 16 balls to spare.

Here’s a list of interesting numbers and stats from this match –

Lowest Powerplay Score for GL – Gujarat Lions scored just 35 runs in the first 6 overs with the loss of 3 wickets. This is their lowest powerplay score so far. With the like of McCullum, Smith and Finch in Top 3, this was quite unexpected.

First, 100 run partnership for Daredevils – Team Management of Daredevils experimented by sending Rishabh Pant as an opener with de Kock and the experiment worked wonders for them. Both of them together put up a 100 run plus partnership. This partnership was very important for DD because in the previous matches the opening stand hasn’t crossed 25 runs and in this match, it has gone over 100.

Second youngest player to score an IPL 50 – Rishabh Pant 18 years and 212 days old and has now become the second youngest player in the history of IPL to score a 50. The youngest player is Sanju Samson, he scored a 50 when he was 18 years and 169 days old in IPL 2013.
