IPL 2016 team analysis: Delhi Daredevils

IPL’s most enigmatic team Delhi Daredevils will launch their 2016 campaign on April 10 against Kolkata at the Eden Gardens. Legendary Indian batsman Rahul Dravid, who has taken Indian U19 and India A teams to a whole new level of expertise under his guidance, is expected to bring similar result at the IPL .

Delhi Daredevils has been the most inconsistent team in the cash-rich IPL since 2008.

This time with under the captaincy of former Indian bowling spearhead Zaheer Khan they are trying to turn around their fortune. They initiated a process for revival from the 2016 IPL auction.  The management changed the combination of team in every tournament which led to poor shows in most of the seasons, besides two – 2008 and 2009.

Taking a cue of what not to do from the previous edition, Daredevils decided to retain most of their key players from the last season and still had most money in their coffers to buy utility players for the forthcoming season of the IPL.

This year Delhi Daredevils have little margin of error and they are desperate to turn the wheel of fortune in their favour. Daredevils got plenty of local players and mercurial South African players in their ranks; captain Zaheer Khan has a lot of options to play with. But the veteran seamer will have to find the right combination to lift the trophy for the first time.

Weakness: Delhi’s weakness is a lack of spirit in the team. In the last eight editions, it was observed that Delhi fails to play as a united team. They always have a good player in their ranks, but failed to get into the groove as they crumble against good teams. Along with this Delhi, Management changed the combination of player each year so that it did not allow the team to settle down.

Strength: Delhi has appointed Rahul Dravid as their mentor who is known for his man-management skills. A player like Carlos Brathwaite, whose favourite player is Rahul Dravid, will fulfill his dream to play under the coaching of Rahul Dravid. Players like JP Duminy, Pawan Negi, India U-19 player Mahipal Lomoror and South African seamer Chris Morris will make a strong Delhi team who will test Kolkata at the Eden Gardens.

Players to watch out for:

Shreyas Iyer: Many Indian fans felt bad as Shreyas Iyer was unable to find a place in the Indian cricket team Iyer despite an incredible domestic season where he was the highest run-getter. He was extremely impressive in the last season of the IPL, and will look to emulate his form with his willow in the IPL 2016.

Carlos Braithwaite: This will be the first IPL for WT20 winning West Indies Carlos Brathwaite . Brathwaite has caught the eye of millions of cricket fans around the world when he hits four sixes of the last over of Ben Stokes that helped West indies to lift the World T20 title for the second time in the tournament history. This all-rounder was bought for Rs. 4.2 crore and is expected to entertain everyone.

Quinton de Kock: The South African opening batsman and wicketkeeper has been in terrific form. During the WT20 in India, he played outstanding cricket. So, he has already warmed up for the IPL and hammer the bowler.

Other players to watch out for are Mayank Agarwal, former Delhi captain JP Duminy, Karun Nair, India U-19 star Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and. Altogether Delhi has a formidable batting attack.

All-rounders: Brathwaite, Duminy, Pawan Negi, whom they bought for a whopping Rs 9.5 crore, Chris Morris, and Mahipal Lomror will add to the all-round options. All of them might not get a game together but in times of an emergency, they have a good reserve bench.

Wicket-keepers: Quinton de Kock will be the first choice for sure. He has been in good form with the bat and will be guarding the stumps. Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson will also add to the wicket-keeping options.

Bowlers: Zaheer Khan will spearhead the Daredevils bowling attack. He will be ably assisted by Imran Tahir, Negi, Morris, Duminy, and Brathwaite.

Likely XI: Mayank Agarwal, Quinton de Kock (wk), JP Duminy, Carlos Brathwaite, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Shreyas Iyer, Pawan Negi, Zaheer Khan (c), Mohammad Shami, Karun Nair, Mahipal Lamoror.

Likey positions: As Delhi set a formidable combination they are expected to finish among the top rank teams this IPL.
