IPL 2017: Mitchell Johnson Praises Mumbai Indians Teammate Jasprit Bumrah

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has heaped praises on his Mumbai Indians teammate Jasprit Bumrah after bowlers led demolition of Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier of IPL 2017 on Friday night to face-off Steven Smith-led side Rising Pune Supergiant.

Johnson in a freewheeling chat with the 23-year-old Bumrah, who is a death-bowling specialist, revealed how Bumrah bowled bouncers at him in nets in 2013 season.

While talking to the unorthodox bowler after qualifying for the 2017 IPL final for the third time, Johnson stated it was the all-round team effort.

“It’s always good you know. This is the third time that Mumbai Indians is in the final. Today to contribute in this manner is a great feeling,” Bumrah responded to Johnson for Iplt webstie when the latter asked him how you feel after brilliant spell with the ball.

The left-arm bowler Johnson has further effusively praised Bumrah for his quality death-bowling throughout the tenth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) which further saw Rohit Sharma-side qualifying for the Grand Finale following convincing six-wicket win over Knight Riders after Gautam Gambhir-led side was bundled out for 107 in 18.5 overs, followed by brilliance from Indians’ bowlers.

Johnson told Bumrah ‘we might be playing together’ what’s the feeling around to have another chance to lead the bowling attack while adding Bumrah bowled exceptionally well.

“It’s a great feeling. In 2013 I was just a youngster coming out of U-19 cricket. To play with you guys it’s always special. I’ve learnt a lot and hopefully now whatever I’ve learnt I will probably get to use it in the final as well,” Bumrah asserted.

Johnson also revealed that he got a hit on the helmet in 2013 while expressing his satisfaction to see himself bowling with youngster Bumrah.

“Usually when you are coming out of U-19 cricket so you think you have pace. So you try to experiment it on bowlers because otherwise if you hit the batsmen they don’t like it,” Bumrah smiled at Johnson.

While having the stock ball as a Yorker, Bumrah bagged 18 wickets in this season in 15 matches at an average of 23.22 and his economy has been best from the other seasons as 7.42.

Mumbai Indians chased down the target of 108 in 14.3 overs which saw skipper Rohit Sharma scoring 24-ball 26 and all-rounder Krunal Pandya remained unbeaten on 45 of 30 balls which were laced with eight fours.

“It was a very good ball and I was very impressed with you [Jasprit Bumrah] at that age and you’ve come a long way,” Johnson refers to Bumrah.

Interestingly, Bumrah’s best figures also came in the second Qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru where he claimed the wickets of Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa and Suryakumar Yadav.

In his four overs, Johnson bagged two wickets in the form of Piyush Chawla and Nathan Coulter-Nile.

The leg-spinner in the form of Karn Sharma bagged four wickets after giving away 16 runs in his four overs which further saw Lasith Malinga claiming a wicket of fast bowler Ankit Rajput.

The wily customer Bumrah bagged three wickets after conceding just seven runs in his three overs which further included a maiden.

Mumbai Indians will take on formidable Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL 2017 final on May 21 (Sunday) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
