Ricky Ponting, the new Head Coach of Delhi Daredevils, has joined the team’s camp at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium that started a couple of days back.
Ponting landed in Delhi yesterday (March 28) and headed for the camp today.
Ponting was officially appointed as team’s Head Coach after Delhi Daredevils’ official confirmed the news on the IPL retention day.
He was associated with Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2016, but the franchise replaced him with Mahela Jayawardene before IPL 2017.
Ponting first joined Mumbai Indians in 2013 as a player.
During the season, he decided to relinquish captaincy and joined the backroom staff.
Rohit Sharma was appointed as the captain, and Mumbai Indians went onto clinch the trophy.
The Rohit Sharma-led side repeated the glory in IPL 2015 with Ponting as Head Coach.
However, the franchise replaced him with Jayawardene before IPL 2017 – under whom the team won IPL trophy, again.
There were reports that Ponting might coach Australian national team.
The reports turned out to be true, and he joined Australia’s backroom staff as Assistant Coach for three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2017.
He again assumed the same role for Trans-Tasman Trophy.
With Darren Lehmann quitting his post as the Head Coach of Australia in the coming week, his name is in the race to join Australia’s backroom staff on permanent basis.
Ponting might have to leave his job at IPL if he joins Australia’s backroom staff in any position.
Meanwhile, Delhi Daredevils’ preparations are in full flow.
Gautam Gambhir, team’s captain, has already joined the team’s camp and he is also keeping a keen eye on players.
It will be after eight years that he will play for Delhi Daredevils again.
His last stint with the team came in 2010 when he was also the captain of the side.
The franchise released him before IPL 2011, and he went onto play for Kolkata Knight Riders for next seven years.
He also led the team to two IPL title victories (2012 and 2014) during his stint as captain.
Delhi Daredevils would be Gambhir to replicate his success for this team as well.
Delhi Daredevils face Kings XI Punjab in their first game in an away game on April 8.
