May 24, 2023 at 1:03 PM
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) banked on a marvellous Faf du Plessis inning to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by two wickets in the qualifier one at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
In a game dominated by the bowlers, du Plessis played his best knock to guide his team to the finals of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Batting first, Hyderabad managed to post a modest 139 runs banking on Carlos Brathwaite. The Chennai bowlers were of top-notch, as Hyderabad lost wickets at regular intervals. However, some late partnership from Yusuf Pathan (24) and Brathwaite (43*) gave something to their bowlers to defend.
The likes of Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja were brilliant, as they contained an able Hyderabad unit. The chase looked like a cakewalk for the Super Kings. However, Hyderabad had some other plans. They made things hard for them standing up to their reputation.
Meanwhile, the end three overs saw a shift in gears, as Faf du Plessis (67*) and Shardul Thakur (15* off 5) guided their team to the finals of IPL 2018.
Here is the players rating of the Super Kings:
Shane Watson: (0/10)
The veteran Australia opener failed to create an impact after having a good IPL.
Shane Watson failed to open his accounts, as he departed in the first over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He will look to put his best feet forward in the mega-finale.
Faf du Plessis: (10/10)
The South African skipper played a magical knock to guide his team to the finals. He stood his ground, as wickets fell from the other end.
Faf du Plessis remained unbeaten on 67 runs. as he took Chennai over the rope.
Suresh Raina: (7/10)
Suresh Raina will curse himself for not capitalising on the start. The southpaw played a quickfire knock of 22 runs from 13 deliveries with the help of four boundaries.
Raina will have to score runs in the finale if Chennai wants to go all the way.
Ambati Rayudu: (0/10)
Ambati Rayudu has been a revelation opening the innings for Chennai this season. However, he failed to create an impact in the playoffs.
Rayudu departed scoring not, as Siddarth Kaul castled his stumps with a brilliant yorker.
MS Dhoni (c & wk): (3.5/10)
The Super Kings skipper struggled to get going, as Rashid Khan bamboozled him with a perfect wrong-un. MS Dhoni managed to score only nine runs off 18 deliveries.
However, Dhoni needs to step up in the most crucial game of the league on Sunday.
Dwayne Bravo: (7.5/10)
The Windies all-rounder was brilliant with the ball, although he failed to score runs with the bat. Bravo returned with two for 25 in his quota of four overs.
Meanwhile, he will look to contribute with the bat and continue his effort with the ball in the final game.
Ravindra Jadeja: (8/10)
Jadeja dried up runs from one end with his accurate line and length. The orthodox left-arm spinner returned with one for 13 in his four overs.
The management will want him to put one more brilliant effort in the eleventh edition of the league.
Harbhajan Singh: (2/10)
The veteran spinner didn’t get an opportunity to bowl at his favourite Wankhede. Further, he failed to impress with the bat, as he got out scoring only two runs from nine balls.
Although he had a topsy-turvy time, Harbhajan will have to put his A game forward in the finale.
Deepak Chahar: (6/10)
The young Deepak Chahar provided an early breakthrough to Chennai, as he removed Shikhar Dhawan off the first delivery. The right-arm seamer returned with one for 31 in his full quota of four overs.
Shardul Thakur: (6.5/10)
Shardul Thakur had a horrific time with the ball, however, made it up with the bat. His late cameo of 15 runs from five deliveries shifted the game to Chennai’s favour.
The dugout will want him to continue this form in the last game of the season.
Lungi Ngidi: (7/10)
The seamer from South Africa is having a terrific time in India. He has bowled fast and has picked wickets constantly for his franchise.
Lungi Ngidi was economical throughout returning with one for 20 in his four overs. The tall and lanky pacer will look to make an impression in the final game on May 27.
