IPL 2018: Quantum Of Punishment To Decide IPL Future Of Smith, Warner

There is still no clarity over the participation of Steven Smith and David Warner in Indian Premier League (IPL).

As per James Sutherland, a decision over their participation in the T20 tournament will depend on the quantum of the verdict.

Should they be banned for a longer period, it will rule them out of the tournament while if they escape a ban – chances of which are minute – they can play the tournament.

Sutherland also informed that he will keep BCCI in known of things regarding the availability of these two players for the tournament.

Cricket Australia could not finalise the punishment for the three players viz Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft, who as per Sutherland are the only players involved in ‘Sandpaper Gate’.

No other player is involved in this.

A clean chit was also given to Australia’s Head Coach, Darren Lehmann.

As per the reports, he was also suspected to have a role and in fact, he had resigned from the job.

However, he has been cleared and the former Aussie all-rounder is set to continue his job until Ashes 2019.

Meanwhile, Smith, Warner and Bancroft will fly back to Australia in next 24 hours, which means that they will also not be part of the playing XI in next Test match.

Smith was already banned and would have missed the Test match, anyway.

Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns have been handed a Test recall to replace these players.

Cricket Australia had already confirmed the inclusion of opener Matt Renshaw in an official announcement made in the evening.

It is to be noted that both Smith has already stepped down from the post of captain of Rajasthan Royals and if cleared to play, he will play under Ajinkya Rahane, the newly announced captain.

Pressure is also building on Warner to at least give up the captaincy, regardless of the fact whether he would be allowed to play in the league or not?
