However, his blistering knock of 79 off 44 deliveries wasn’t enough to hand CSK a victory, as they fell short by four runs in the end. CSK was falling behind the game for the major part of the chase.
However, a confident Mahendra Singh Dhoni had other ideas. With 55 required off the last three overs, Dhoni changed the complexion of the game with some ferocious shots.
Boundaries kept flowing from his bat. His exceptional hitting brought the calculation down to 17 off the final over. Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin handed over the ball to Mohit Sharma in the final over.
Dhoni smashed a boundary on the 3rd delivery. However, Mohit was clever enough and bowled in the wide lines. It made life difficult for Dhoni, as he was also suffering from back spasms. Eventually, Mohit held his nerve and bowled some good Yorkers which eventually prevented CSK from getting over the line.
Dhoni finished off the match with a brilliant six straight down the ground.
For the Kings XI Punjab, Chris Gayle arrived in a grand fashion. Playing his first match for his new franchise, Gayle looked in ominous touch and stroked his way to 63 off just 33 deliveries which included seven fours and four sixes. His partner KL Rahul also batted well and shared a 96 runs partnership for the opening wicket.
Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair and Yuvraj Singh also chipped in with useful contributions which eventually helped Punjab post 197 on the board.
Coming back to Dhoni, it was undoubtedly the best knock he has played in the recent past. He almost single-handedly won the game for his franchise.
Famous journalist and adjudicator, Rajdeep Sardesai recalled what Dhoni had said to him while interviewing for Democracy’s XI.
“Will never forget what @msdhoni told me while interviewing him for Democracy’s XI: you think I am under pressure in the last over, don’t forget the bowler is even under greater pressure because he knows he is bowling to me!”
