IPL 2019: Coach Knows What’s Best for the Team and Individuals – Jacques Kallis
Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) coach Jacques Kallis is focusing on the importance of bench strength and the roles of coaches. He believes the appropriate workout apart from the proper planning will lead to a successful campaign for the team, in particular. In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2019), KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik has led his team quite well.
So far, Knight Riders have won two games out of three with their net run-rate well in plus.
IPL 2019: Jacques Kallis on ‘depth’ in the team –
Moreover, according to the belief of Kallis, the players warming the bench are crucial in such a process. Kallis reiterated the reserve players should take responsibility—to deliver according to the situation.
“It is so important to have a strong squad with plenty of depth but it is equally important to ensure that the reserves are getting the best and most intense training possible. It is extremely hard for any player, no matter how talented or experienced, to come into the XI ‘cold’ after a couple of games on the bench,” Kallis wrote in his column for the ToI.
While talking about injuries, veteran all-rounder believes it’s the part and parcel of the game. And, when it comes to the lengthy tournament like IPL, it becomes quite difficult to avoid such injuries.
Regarding such circumstances, Kallis has his viewpoint while suggesting the teams are supposed to move on even after a setback.
While hailing his wards, who’re focused on training, Kallis believes over trying could cost things or too for a team and at the same time, hinted training not up to the mark could affect players’ performance.
“Overtraining inevitably leaves players ‘flat’, and that can be either physical or mental. Train too little and players are under-done, which affects not only their performance but also stamina,” Kallis observed.
With Kolkata set to take on depleted-looking Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 5 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
“Injuries are an inevitable part of a long and intense tournament like the IPL and they should never come as a shock or a disappointment to the coaching staff, because every contingency plan should have been made. Well, of course, they are disappointing but it is pointless worrying about them and you simply move on,” Kallis said.
According to Kallis, they’re working as per a plan which sits well for the team in a nutshell. In terms of chalking out a plan, Kallis stressed that coaches act differently.
“The concept of ‘pacing’ a team’s campaign in the early stages is an interesting one and different coaches have different ideas,” Kallis opined.
IPL 2019: Coaches work on different concepts – Jacques Kallis
While dissecting the concept of different coaches, Kallis maintained some usually believe in tinkering with the playing XI and while some focus on hard work during the net sessions to stay intact for the game.
“Some believe in rest and rotation while some are advocates of adjusting the length and intensity of training between matches to keep players fresh,” Kallis further added.
He cited that coaches know what’s in the best of interest for the teams apart from the game of individuals.
“I believe the coach knows what’s best for the team and for each individual,” Kallis stated.
Besides, the players of KKR has trained hard and worked on their loopholes. Kallis concluded it by saying their team has the potential to go deep into the lengthy tournament.
The two-time IPL champions Knight Riders’ players are keen to leave an impact in Bengaluru.
