Indian Premier League (IPL), over the years, have been a breeding ground for the young players to impress the national selectors. The league which commenced in 2008 have helped Indian National Cricket team create a strong bench strength in the last few years. Many players have gone on to play international cricket solely based on their performance in the IPL.
Meanwhile, another exciting season of the cash-rich league is on the cards and the fans are already gushing over it. The upcoming edition will commence from March 23 with Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chepauk. However, the governing council is yet to announce the full schedule as they are waiting for the government to announce the dates of the general election.
While many cricketers will make their debut in the league, few cricketers’ careers are fading away slowly. They have also lost their place in the Indian National Cricket team but still holding it right in IPL.
Here are the five players who are a regular feature in the IPL but has lost their place in the national side:
YUVRAJ SINGH
The veteran all-rounder from Punjab has taken a detour and will represent Mumbai Indians in the upcoming edition of the league. However, it was not a smooth sail for one of India’s greatest heroes. After Kings XI Punjab decided not to retain him ahead of the 2019 IPL auctions, Yuvraj went to the auctions with a base price of Rs 1 crore.
Despite that, Yuvraj Singh went unsold in the round of the auctions before Mumbai roped him for his base price at the dying moments. However, he currently falls on the wrong side of the national team as he last played in 2017 against Windies.
HARBHAJAN SINGH
The veteran off-spinner has fallen behind in the race after Ravichandran Ashwin emerged in the international circuit. A long time has passed by, and the young spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have taken the baton from Ashwin. He last played for India in 2015 and has since then struggled to find a place in the squad.
But Harbhajan Singh continues to a pivotal member for his franchise Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Last year he shifted his base to Chennai from Mumbai and had done a fair job for MS Dhoni & Co.
YUSUF PATHAN
The Baroda all-rounder’s international career didn’t last too long amidst so many hard-hitting batters who have come up the ranks in the national team. Although Pathan’s stint in the international circuit was cut short, he had a long run in the domestic cricket.
After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to victory, Yusuf Pathan now features for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has done an exciting job for the franchise, and the management will want him to continue in IPL 2019.
MOHIT SHARMA
The fast bowler from Haryana, Mohit Sharma has been a regular feature in the Indian Premier League since Chennai roped him in 2013 on the back of a robust Ranji Trophy performance. He impressed in IPL 2013 with 20 wickets from 15 matches and was soon playing ODI cricket for India.
However, he fells on the wrong side and soon lost his place in the national team failing to match up with his peers. His international career lasted for only 26 ODIs and eight T20Is with his last game coming in 2015. But Mohit Sharma continues to be a reckoning force in the coveted league as he gears up for another season with the Kings XI Punjab.
AMIT MISHRA
The veteran leg-spinner has been a match-winner for his side every time he has stepped on to the field. His googlies are one of the best in the business around the world. But Amit Mishra lost track in the long run with young Yuzvendra Chahal taking giant strides in international cricket. Also, Mishra has had some fitness issues in a time when the Indian team is focused on fitness has gone against him.
Meanwhile, he continues to be a strong force in the IPL and has been the charge for Delhi Capitals, previously known as Delhi Daredevils. The franchise, who has made an array of changes will depend on him as they aim to lift their maiden IPL trophy.
