Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag believes KL Rahul went on to alter his game to break into India’s World Cup squad. KL Rahul has been in fine form in the ongoing Indian Premier League, which played a key role in his selection for the ODI showpiece. The stylish batsman has played with maturity in the ongoing tournament.
Rahul is the third highest run-getter of the competition as he has amassed 399 runs in 10 matches for Kings XI Punjab. The flamboyant batsman has batted with an average of 57 and has scored his runs with a strike rate of 127. In fact, KL Rahul has played smartly as he has a strike rate of 94 runs in the powerplay overs. Subsequently, he is changing gears when the fielding restrictions are lifted.
Rahul has batted with sense.
Virender Sehwag said while talking to Cricbuzz, “I think he is very smart. This time the World Cup team was to be selected. In fact, there was a lot of doubts that will he make it or not? In the first phase of the season, it was imperative for him to score runs not focus too much on strike rate. Thus, he did the same thing. He knew that I can confirm my World Cup berth if I can score runs in the first five or six matches of the season. After getting out cheaply in the first two matches, he got his strike rate from 158 to 127”.
KL Rahul was able to confirm his World Cup spot because of his consistent performances. The current form came to his aid and he would like to carry his good form going in the World Cup.
Rahul has been picked into the team as a back-up opener and he may bat in the middle order if needed. The right-hander hasn’t played a lot of white ball format and his form in the red ball version hasn’t been impressive in the last one year. Rahul will like to grab his opportunity with both hands in the forthcoming ODI showpiece.
India will begin their World Cup campaign against South Africa on 5th June at Southampton.
