IPL 2019: Match 22, KXIP vs SRH – Too Close to Comfort – Ravichandran Ashwin Following their Win Over Sunrisers Hyderabad
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) stormed to the third spot in the points table of the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Following the hard-earned victory, Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin said it was a close encounter and could have been anybody’s game.
Meanwhile, chasing 151 runs, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal led the home side almost close to the winning runs. Both the batsmen crossed their individual half-centuries but some timely wickets from Sandeep Sharma and Siddarth Kaul in the 18th and 19th over of the match made the game exciting. However, KL Rahul remained to see his team home alongside Sam Curran.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Ravichandran Ashwin admitted that it was a nerve-wracking game. Kings XI Punjab have played quite a few close encounters and Ashwin admits there are still scopes for them to improve. He also revealed that they executed the plan brilliantly; although there are chances to work on it more. Ashwin also thanked the supporters for turning out in huge numbers.
“Too close to comfort. We have had really close games, the biggest positive for me is there is scope for improvement. It will be really harsh to say that we conceded 100 runs in the last 10 overs. The plans were held very well upon. There is enough ability to work on it. The crowd have been splendid this year and it’s a massive support for us,” Ashwin said.
Mujeeb knows Mohali very well: Ashwin
Kings XI Punjab have used Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb-ur Rahman with the new ball which has helped the franchise since the last year. The young spinner has chipped in with early breakthroughs and has been economical as well. Ravichandran Ashwin said it was thier plan to bowl Mujeeb upfront. He got rid of Hyderabad opener Jonny Bairstow early in the innings to give a good start to this game.
“It was always in our plans, Mujeeb knows Mohali very well and as a spinner, you need to know the lengths and speeds to bowl at. Sometimes the figures don’t do justice, but I think Mujeeb bowled well today. You do use spinners with the new ball and Mujeeb has done it all his life for Afghanistan. And it was a good match-up between Bairstow and Mujeeb,” he concluded.
