Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally clicked as a unit to register their first win in this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beating Kings XI Punjab by eight wickets at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to a steady start in pursuit of 174 runs. Virat Kohli and Parthiv Patel didn’t undertake too many risks and concentrated more on ones and twos. Meanwhile, they put odd deliveries to the boundaries and got a head start to their chase. But Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin got the better of Parthiv to have Bangalore for 43 for one. Since then, Kohli combined with AB de Villiers to shoulder the innings on the line of victory.
The pair who have won Royal Challengers Bangalore many games didn’t overdo things and wanted to take the game the wire. Kohli and de Villiers took calculated risks to keep wickets at hand. The added 85 runs for the second wicket before Kohli slapped one straight to deep mid-wicket. Kings XI Punjab looked to bounce back in the game, but an 18-run over off Andre Tye took the game to Bangalore’s favour. AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis believed in their abilities to take their team home to script the first victory for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Previously, Chris Gayle single-handedly powered Kings XI Punjab 173 runs for the loss of four wickets. He remained unbeaten on 99 runs to do the bulk of the scoring while the second highest run-scorer was KL Rahul and Mandeep Singh who both scored 18 runs. Meanwhile, Rahul and Gayle got Punjab off to a flying start adding 66 runs for the first wicket. Yuzvendra Chahal got the better of Rahul to draw the first blood.
However, Gayle had no mood to stop as he kept playing his shots while the odd boundaries kept coming. Mayank Agarwal and Sarfaraz Khan got starts but failed to capitalise, and Mandeep Singh gave good support to help Kings XI Punjab post a respectable total on the scoreboard.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will look to bank on this victory and script a turnaround in this edition of the IPL as it reaches its business end.
