IPL 2019, Match 36: Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians- We Showed a Lot of Courage to Pull Them Back to 160 Says Mom Steve Smith
Rajasthan Royals kept their hopes alive in Vivo IPL 12 after registering an impressive victory against the Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets and with 5 deliveries to spare. It was a good all-round show by Rajasthan who needed a win badly. Ajinkya Rahane was earlier sacked as the skipper of Rajasthan and Steve Smith was handed over the reign.
It was a great all-round performance by RR and it was a captain’s knock from Steve Smith. He was dropped from the previous game and it was a fairytale story to be the captain in the next match and lead your side to a good victory. After batting first Mumbai Indians posted a competitive score of 161 in their allotted 20 overs and it was a good score on a slow Jaipur track.
Rohit Sharma was dismissed early but Quinton de Kock played a brilliant knock and scored a well-deserved half-century. The introduction of Shreyas Gopal turned the match on its head as he bowled brilliantly and restricted the run flow.
It was again Hardik Pandya who provided the much needed late impetus with a quickfire knock of 23 of 15 deliveries. A score of 161 was a good one but Mumbai Indians needed to bowl well to defend the total. Sanju Samson and Ajinkya Rahane came out to begin proceedings and Samson looked in ominous touch from the outset.
He played some brilliant shots and raced off to 35 of 19 deliveries before Rahul Chahar foxed him with a flighted delivery. He was bowling brilliantly and also dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Ben Stokes. It was a great spell of bowling which helped MI roar back into the match. Captain Steve Smith played the anchor’s role to perfection and also found the boundaries on a consistent basis.
The partnership between Smith and Riyan Parag turned the match in favour of Rajasthan again. Parag smashed 43 of 29 deliveries which were studded with 5 fours and a six. The Mumbai Indians bowlers were impressive in the final few overs but the target proved to be way too less in the end. Steve Smith for his heroic match-winning knock was adjudged the Man of the Match Award.
This is what Steve Smith said at the post-match presentation
I haven’t contributed as much as I would’ve liked through the tournament and it feels really nice to have gotten the boys over the line. Hopefully, we can carry it forward from here. We can’t worry about others’ results, it’s just about us and our game.
We showed a lot of courage to pull them back to 160 and executed our plans really well. It’s never good when you don’t take your catches, but Jofra pulled it back really well for us with the ball and was terrific. Parag was really impressive; I have been watching him in the nets and with the bat looks like a seasoned campaigner.
He’s a great kid and has a great future, I hope I was as confident when I was 17. When you are young and come into a team you have a carefree attitude and kept playing his shots. We just need to stay focused on the processes, we just need to turn up and win. Every game’s a final, and we have to win each one. Let’s hope it turns out well for us.
