IPL 2019: Shreyas Iyer Keen to End Delhi Capitals Title Drought
Shreyas Iyer, who will be leading Delhi Capitals in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) is keen to end their barren run in the tournament. Delhi is one of the few teams who are yet to lift the trophy. Instead, they have finished at the bottom of the table four times, more than any other sides.
Meanwhile, the Capitals have made a handful of changes in a bid to change their fortunes in the tournament. They have changed their name to Delhi Capitals, previously known as Delhi Daredevils. The franchise owners have also brought some changes in the support staff. One area where the franchise have struggled the most is their poor fielding. The management have added Mohammad Kaif as the fielding and also included Sourav Ganguly as the advisor.
Excited to lead the side
Shreyas Iyer will be leading full time for the first time in the IPL. Last year, he took over the reign after Gautam Gambhir stepped down midway through the season. The Mumbai-born cricketer in a chat with Sportstar admitted that he is aiming to make the best use of the resources and do things which are right for his side. He also seemed determined to break the title drought for Delhi Capitals in this season.
“As far as I’m concerned, I just want to make the best use of it make things right for Delhi Capitals, which people think is impossible at the moment. I want to change that mindset and break the jinx,” Iyer said.
The 24-year-old Shreyas Iyer seemed excited with the role and leading the side from the first game. Speaking about his plans, Iyer states that he will keep in mind everybody’s approach towards the game and is hoping to have a great season. Beside his captainship, Iyer will also play a vital role with the bat in the Delhi middle-order. He has been in good form and will hope to continue with it.
“I’m really excited to be captaining the side from the very first match. Definitely, I’ll be well aware of individual mindsets and their approach towards their performance. I am looking forward to each and every individual to have a great season and it’s going to be equally important for us to get the best out of the preparations,” he added.
Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 24 (Sunday) at the Wankhede Stadium.
