IPL 2019: Steve Smith Takes Sly Dig At BCCI Ahead Of IPL Return
Former Australia skipper Steve Smith has taken a sly dig after not being allowed to play in the last edition of the Indian Premier League. Smith along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft had received lengthy bans from Cricket Australia last year in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal. While Bancroft was banned for nine months, Smith and Warner and were handed 12-month ban each. Cricket Australia had barred the trio from playing first-class cricket and Big Bash League in Australia and international cricket.
As a result, all the players were eligible to play T20 leagues across the world. However, the BCCI decided to impose their own sanctions and barred the two stars from playing in last IPL. Both the players had later played in Global Canada T20, Caribbean Premier League as well as the Bangladesh Premier League. Fortunately, both Warner and Smith were retained by their respective franchises.
And as Smith gears up to make his comeback to the IPL where he will play for Rajasthan Royals, he has taken a dig at the Indian board. The Australia star said only BCCI knows why he did not get the permission to play in the last IPL.
“I am available for all the matches and BCCI has to answer that why I was not allowed to play earlier,” Smith said during a promotional event on Friday.
“It is exciting to be back on field and I am looking forward to the tournament,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals will open their campaign against Kings XI Punjab on March 25. Smith, whose year-long ban will end on March 29, will be looking to hit the ground running. Before the suspension, Smith had led the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants to the final of the IPL in 2017. The Royals will be hoping for a similar show from their Australian recruit.
