IPL 2019: Steven Smith Replaces Ajinkya Rahane as Captain of Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals have sacked Ajinkya Rahane as their captain in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League. Subsequently, former Australian skipper Steven Smith has taken charge of the team. Rajasthan Royals are in the bottom half of the points table at the seventh position.
Royals is at the seventh position in the points table as they have managed to win only two matches in the season. They have played eight games in which they have lost six matches. The franchise now believes that the team needs a new approach in their leadership.
Smith will lead.
Meanwhile, Steven Smith has the experience of the leading in the Indian Premier League. Smith had led Rising Pune Supergiant to the finals of IPL 2017.
Zubin Bharucha, Head of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals, said as quoted by Rajasthan Royals website, ‘Ajinkya is and will always be a true Royal. He led the team to the play offs in 2018 in a very challenging scenario and that will go down as one of the great comebacks of the IPL. He remains a key part of our side and leadership team and will extend support wherever required to Steve.”
“Steve is one of the most innovative and successful captains in the world, in all formats of the game. We are confident he can lead the Royals to success,” added Bharucha.
Furthermore, Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t delivered the goods with the bat, which must have played a hand in his sacking. The right-hander has thus far scored 201 runs at an average of 25.12 and strike rate of 133.11.
On the other hand, Steven Smith who will now lead the team has so far amassed 186 runs in six innings at an average of 37.50. However, Smith strike rate has been his Achilles Heel as he scored his runs at a strike rate of 107.51.
The announced comes just before Rajasthan Royals’ ninth match of the season. They will lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the 36th match of the season and they will be led by a new leader in Steven Smith.
