IPL 2019: SWOT Analysis of Mumbai Indians

Three-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will be raring to go as they set off their IPL 12 campaign against the Delhi Daredevils at their home ground Wankhede Stadium on 24th March. It was a rather unfortunate season for Mumbai last time around. They fought till the end even after losing most of their initial games. However, in a must-win situation in their last group game against the Delhi Daredevils, they faltered big time and had to miss the playoffs berth by a whisker.

The balance looks ideal for Mumbai this year. However, there is certainly no doubt about the fact that the star players need to come good on their day. They have to outclass their oppositions more consistently than the last season. Mumbai lost quite a few humdingers in the season which included the loss against Chennai Super Kings in the very first match of the tournament.

Strengths

Mumbai Indians is a squad consisting of superstars. At the top, they have someone like Quinton de Kock who has been an exceptional white ball player for South Africa. Suryakumar Yadav has done a good job at the top of the order and is expected to handle the top slot. The middle order consists of some solid players in the form of Rohit Sharma, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard.

They also have a backup seamer in the form of Ben Cutting. The core team looks one of the best on player. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah has

done the job for Mumbai on a number of occasions. He will have his mentor Lasith Malinga to guide him around in this edition. The Slinga fast bowler from Sri Lanka will definitely look to make a mark in the tournament ahead of World Cup.

Even the spin bowling department has the likes of Mayank Markande and Rahul Chahar who are wrist spinners and can add variety to the squad. Markande had done a fabulous job for Mumbai in the initial few games last season. All in all Mumbai Indians looks a formidable unit and have immense strengths in their franchise.

Weakness

Some of the players in the squad are not at their best. For example Lasith Malinga, there is no doubt about the fact that he has been a sensational bowler for Mumbai over the years. However, he is in the twilight of his career and we cannot expect him to come good consistently like he used to before.

There are hardly any weaknesses in the team. However, you have to pick one that will be the spinners. Both Markande and Rahul Chahar are relative rookies and might leak runs on a few days. Apart from these few areas, Mumbai looks a solid team on paper.

Opportunities

There are many young players in the squad and they will look to grab the opportunities with both hands. Some of the top players might well be rested during some parts of the tournament due to the World Cup. Hence many of the new faces might get an opportunity as the tournament progresses. For instance, Ishan Kishan would look to have a good season which might pave his way for a national call-up in the near future.

Lockie Ferguson who is a quick bowler has been a good addition to the squad and he will look definitely look to come good if given the opportunities. It will also be a golden opportunity for Mumbai to win the 4th season. If they do manage to lift the title, they will again overtake Chennai Super Kings with more titles in the kitty. Some of the top players will also look to get back to touch ahead of the World Cup.

Threats

There is no such threat as such for the Mumbai Indians as we go into the 12th season of IPL. However, the local players who might be part of the Indian squad for the World Cup cannot afford to have a bad season.

Although IPL performances don’t signify for a spot in the national team but there is no doubt that the selectors will definitely look into the IPL performances.

Being in rhythm ahead of the quadrennial event will be very important especially for the Indian players. Off form for any of the top players might spell doom for Mumbai.
