Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) released 12 players, including Dale Steyn, before IPL 2020 auction. The releases mean that they only have two overseas players in the form of AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali.

Apart from Steyn, the franchise has released Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetymer, Akshdeep Nath, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Colin De Grandhomme, Prayas Ray Barman, Tim Southee, Kulwant Khejroliya, Himmat Singh, Heinrich Klaasen and Milind Kumar.

The release of Steyn came as a big surprise as he provided the much-needed firepower to RCB’s pace attack in two matches that he played. A shoulder injury ruled him out of the tournament and also see him miss World Cup 2019.

Stoinis was brought in RCB from King XI Punjab ahead of IPL 2019 auction att a high price but has been released. Akshdeep was one of the costliest picks as well. He was bought for Rs 3.6 Crores but just managed 61 runs in the tournament.

Grandomme was another RCB’s big purchase which did not repay them benefits. Bought for Rs 2.2 Croes in IPL 2018 auction, he scored 177 runs in 13 matches and scalped two wickets.

The franchise also released leg-spinner Barman, who they for Rs 1.5 Crores. He made his debut in the previous season but went for 56 runs in his only appearance against Sunrisers Hyderabad where both David Warner and Jonny Bairstow scored centuries.

Hetmyer, the West Indies’ batsman, was always in line to be released. Bought for Rs 4.2 Crores, the left-handed batsman scored 90 runs in five matches, which included 73 in the final league stage game against SRH.

RCB now have a big task to rebuild the team and the franchise will have wholesome of new players next year.

They also have a new coaching staff headed by Director of Cricket, Mike Hesson. Simon Katich is RCB’s head coach. He was previously associated with Kolkata Knight Riders while Hesson had a stint with KXIP in IPL 2018.
