Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer, is disappointed with MS Dhoni’s strategy in the defeated match against Rajasthan Royals. He has criticized the decision of the CSK captain of sending himself at no. 7 when he should have promoted himself up in the batting order to chase down the mammoth target of 216 runs.
CSK needed power hitting in the middle but they sent inexperienced youngsters instead of Dhoni. When the skipper arrived, they need 103 runs off 38 balls. The wicketkeeper-batsman kept on taking single and managed just 9 runs in 12 balls until the 19th over. He hit three massive sixes in the last over but until then CSK had already lost the game.
In the post-match press conference, MS Dhoni said that they were an experiment in the batting order because it’s early in the tournament. He added that they want to try different things out to give other opportunities.
Sunil Gavaskar against MS Dhoni’s approach
The justification of MS Dhoni could not convince Sunil Gavaskar. He said that Dhoni had already thought they are going to lose the match because he came to bat after five wickets were down. As per him, this was not the correct way of Dhoni’s approaching the game with a big total.
“We can’t surmise that in the previous, he sent in Sam Curran ahead of him and Curran got 18 off 6 deliveries. Curran did well again, he hit a couple of sixes,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
“And then I thought he might come in after that instead of sending young Ruturaj Gaikwad because when the opposition has got 216 means he has to start playing his shots from the word go. It’s not going to be easy for him. If the opposition had got 160-170, then, by all means, send in Ruturaj so he can maybe play himself in.
“But coming into bat after 5 wickets is like he had decided this match is not going to be won. And that’s no way to approach any target. You got to go in with the belief you will be able to win it,” Gavaskar said.
Meanwhile, CSK had won the IPL 2020 opener match against MI. They will play their next match against DC on Friday.
