Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Dinesh Karthik has hailed youngsters like Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti for their excellent performance with the ball against Rajasthan Royals. The Jaipur-based franchise had the won the toss and opted to field. KKR went on to score 174 from 20 overs with important knocks from Shubman Gill (47 runs) and Eoin Morgan (34 runs).
The Royals could not bear the wrath of KKR bowlers and could only get 137 runs on the board in 20 overs. KKR won the match by 37 runs. Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti had an incredible night taking two wickets each at an amazing economy rate. They were both signed by KKR in 2018, but due to injuries could not make an impact in the past two years.
It makes me a little emotional: Dinesh Karthik on Mavi and Nagarkoti’s comeback
Youngsters Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti had starred in India’s Under-19 World Cup Campaign in 2018 and were both signed by KKR in the same year, owing to the lucrative deals.
However, Mavi could only make nine appearances in IPL 2018 and was out of IPL 2019 due to stress fracture to his back. Nagarkoti suffered a back injury which kept him out for two seasons. Skipper Dinesh Karthik stated that the incredible comeback of the youngsters makes him emotional.
“I think it is a very special thing (watching KKR’s patience pay off). It makes me a little emotional. The journey that these boys have been through when they were not playing was hard, they had doubts whether their body will cope or whether they will play again.
“For them to come out here, and express themselves and wanting to do something with both the bat and the ball is really special,” Dinesh Karthik said in a post match interview.
Lot of areas we need to improve: Dinesh Karthik
The skipper still feels it wasn’t the perfect game and they need to improve a lot. Once again, Karthik failed with the bat, scoring only 1 run. Shubman Gill’s 47, and Eoin Morgan’s 34, helped KKR get a satisfactory score on the board.
“Wouldn’t call it a perfect game. Lot of areas we need to improve. A lot of things pleased me – the way Gill started, Mavi bowled, the way Russell batted, the way Morgan kept his head. The beautiful sight of the youngsters going for the catch no matter how high it is,” Dinesh Karthik said.
The Kolkata Knight Riders now sit second on the IPL table with two victories and one loss to their name. They will next face Delhi Capitals on October 3rd at the Sharjah cricket stadium.
