IPL 2023: I Think We Could Have Chased Better – Vijay Shankar On Gujarat Titans Batting Display Against CSK

Gujarat Titans all-rounder Vijay Shankar feels that their team should have chased down the total better against the Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 and ruined the opportunity to take the game deep against the four-time champions on Tuesday. The defending champions fell short by 15 runs in the chase at the end of 20 overs.

Gujarat Titans suffered only their 4th loss in the 18 games they have chased so far in the cash-rich league as the team could not ace down the chase of the master tactician MS Dhoni, as he rotated his bowlers very well to defend the total in the final over.

Speaking to the media after the loss against Chennai Super King, Vijay Shankar feels that the team should have chased down the total and said that CSK bowlers kept picking wickets in the middle overs which made it difficult for them to chase down the total and reckons that it is important to build partnerships in the middle overs, as a single partnership would have gotten them through in the chase.

“I think we could have chased better. We could have got the game much closer,” Vijay Shankar said.

“I think they (CSK) bowled bold pretty well in the middle overs. The middle overs are very, very important for any team that is chasing. We lost wickets. Otherwise, if you see, we lost by 15 runs. If two batters were batting, things would have been different. It is just about losing a wicket at the wrong time. Maybe a partnership of 20, 30 runs in the middle could have got us closer to the game,” he added.

Chennai Super Kings spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Maheesh Theekshana controlled the middle over beautifully picking up the crucial wickets of Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Dasun Shanaka, and Rahul Tewatia to help the four-time champions enter the record 10th final in the cash-rich league.

It Is Just About Regrouping And Coming Out And Giving Our Best – Vijay Shankar

Vijay Shankar revealed that he is better prepared to play in any position for the team, as many criticized GT’s decisions to hold back the Tamil Nadu all-rounder in the chase especially since he scored a vital 53 off just 34 balls batting at No.3 position against RCB and he walked into bat at NO.5 position in his home ground as he could not finish the game for his side.

“Actually, if you see overall in this season, all the batters have played in different positions. So it is not just this game. For most of the games, I think that was the strength of our batting unit as well. Whoever went in different situations, we were able to adapt to it and get runs for the team”.

Vijay Shankar feels that it is important to adapt to the different conditions and reckons that it is important to regroup as soon as possible to do well in Qualifier 2 in their home conditions and urges everyone to give their side to reach the second consecutive final.

“I think till now, we have been playing a lot of home and away games. So it is just about going there and adapting to our conditions as quickly as we can. And overall, we’ve been playing wonderful cricket. So one game won’t change much. So it is just about regrouping and coming out and giving our best for the team,” Vijay Shankar concluded.

Gujarat Titans will look to make a strong comeback in Qualifier 2 on Friday, as they would take on the winners of the game between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants.
