IPL Auctions 2017 Analysis: How All The Eight Teams fared?

Some sparkling outcomes came to the fore in the 2017 IPL Player Auctions, as some ferocious bidding was witnessed. While some unheard names made a fortune, a few renowned and reputed individuals found no takers.

But at the end of the day, this is how this glorious game functions – you lose some on odd days, while you win some on even days.

Nevertheless, after a competitive round of auctions, the teams look well stacked up and one can already anticipate an exhilarating edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in stores.

Keeping in mind the auction, we have a look at how the teams are placed and how strong they seem on paper.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will defend their title when IPL season 10 starts from April 5.
  1. Sunrisers Hyderabad:

The Sunrisers think tank was circumspect about the spending and played their cards well in the end. The defending champions have a more than a decent side which comprises of world class individuals such as David Warner, Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In this auction, they emphasised more towards the bowling department and that was later seconded by coach Tom Moody, who cited injury issues to the first choice players as a reason. The men from Hyderabad etched themselves in history by becoming the first IPL franchise to give breaks to Afghan players.

Teenage spin sensation Rashid Khan will surely be the one to watch out for since spin was a department in which Sunrisers were deficient last season. The experience of the 45-year-old Praveen Tambe will further aid them.

With the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Mustafizur Rahman and a few other emerging pacers like Mohammed Siraj bowling is definitely the stronger suit of this team. On the whole, Sunrisers is a mighty strong unit on paper with great skills in both departments.

Royal Challengers Bangalore.
  1. Royal Challengers Bangalore:

It was obvious that the void left by Mitchell Starc’s absence would have to be filled at any cost. That was done in the form of England’s latest pace sensation Tymal Mills, who was brought for Rs. 12 crores. Roping in talented pacer Aniket Choudhary was another optimistic move and now the pace bowling department looks decent with Mills, Choudhary, S. Aravind and Adam Milne slotting in. Spin wise as well, the lion-hearted Yuzvendra Chahal now has Pawan Negi for the company.

Batting wise, Royal Challengers are way ahead of other teams with the likes of Chris Gayle, Kohli, De Villiers, KL Rahul and Watson in. All in all, the Royal Challengers have ticked all boxes but on the bowling front, they are heavily reliant on Tymal Mills. An off day for Mills could have consequences for this team while defending totals.

Gujarat Lions.
  1. Gujarat Lions:

Gujarat Lions were among the smartest players at the auction table. Their batting already comprises T20 powerhouse with Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch, Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina forming the top order. To add to that, the explosive abilities of England star Jason Roy just amplify their advantage. The presence of all-rounders such as Dwayne Bravo, James Faulkner and Ravindra Jadeja makes this an ideal T20 team that covers all bases.

If one was to point out a weakness, it would surely be the lack of overseas bowlers. Their pace battery comprises of Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Manpreet Gony and Dhawal Kulkarni, all are India discards.

Spin wise as well, their overseas cupboard is bare. Thereby, it seems that the Lions could have potentially missed a trick or two by not roping in more overseas bowlers.

  1. Kolkata Knight Riders:

The loss of Andre Russell even before the start has already put the Knight Riders on the back foot. However, they tried to recover from that setback by giving their best shot at the auction table. The Knight Riders management has roped in exceptional pacers in the form of Trent Boult, Chris Woakes and Nathan Coulter-Nile. With talented Indian pacers in the form of Umesh Yadav and Ankeet Rajpoot present, things look even brighter.

Nevertheless, the Knight Riders missed a trick or two by not roping in a power hitter. It was right in this department where Russell would thrash the bowlers every other day. The question mark over the form of Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa further put the batting in jeopardy. That will put added burden on the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey.

Mumbai Indians.
  1. Mumbai Indians:

Mumbai’s bowling department suddenly looks mighty after they added their Mitchell Johnson. When they won the IPL in 2013, it was the new-ball pair of Malinga and Johnson who demolished the opposing top order. Along with this pair now, they also have the services of Jasprit Bumrah, someone who has emerged as a mighty fine prospect in limited overs for India. At the auction table, they filled in their spin cupboard by adding Karn Sharma and K. Gowtham.

On the batting front as well, everything looks fine with Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Kieron Pollard, Saurabh Tiwary and Jos Buttler. The main challenge for Mumbai, however, would be to leave out some reputed names and ensure that they are playing their best XI on the field.

Delhi Daredevils.
  1. Delhi Daredevils:

A bowling lineup that comprises of Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami, Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, Chris Morris and Amit Mishra is bound to challenge even the best of batting line-ups in this format. It wouldn’t require rocket science to admit that bowling is Delhi Daredevils’ biggest strength. Batting-wise, they have an array of fresh talent in the form of Quinton De Kock, Shreyas Iyer, Rishab Pant and Sam Billings.

The inclusion of India’s latest batting star Karun Nair is another solid addition in their batting. At the auctions, they roped in a couple of all-rounders in the form of Angelo Mathews and Corey Anderson. A major challenge for the Daredevils would be while deciding their overseas players – if to go with their all-rounders or back their specialists to win them games.

  1. Rising Pune Supergiants:

Undoubtedly the poorest spenders at the auction table among all franchises, the Rising Pune Supergiants seem to be in dire straits at the moment. Their spending method seemed profusely obnoxious, as they shelled out 83% of their balance to acquire just one player in the form of Ben Stokes. With such a  minimal amount left, they were bound to be in for some serious trouble and that was evident as some unheard pacers were eventually roped in to fit in the budget.

This is the only team where there are more weaknesses than the positives. First and foremost, the absence of any power hitter will surely take a toll on the overall batting effort. Along with that, the absence of a renowned pacer will further create chaos in the death overs. There is bound to be an excess burden on the shoulders of R. Ashwin.

Kings XI Punjab.
  1. Kings XI Punjab:

The Kings XI cannot boast of having many superstars in their ranks, but their team is full of capable match-winners. They bought Martin Guptill for just Rs. 50 Lacs and it is a great steal as the New Zealand opener will love batting at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. With Hashim Amla, David Miller, Eoin Morgan, M. Vijay and Shaun Marsh present, batting wise Kings XI Punjab seems quite strong. The all-round skills of Marcus Stoinis could well go down as the X factor for them.

Bowling wise though, they seem a little weak with just Matt Henry being the overseas pacer. Mohit Sharma and Varun Aaron are talented, but on more days than not, they are quite expensive. Sandeep Sharma’s presence will surely boost their bowling department. The fact that Axar Patel doesn’t have an able backup spinner will again hamper the Kings XI.
