The Mumbai police have arrested a suspected bookie who had launched a portal ‘Vbet24’ (URL: www.vbet24.com) for bookies across the city to operate directly during the just-concluded IPL season. Jeetu Dadhia, the main operator of the portal, was arrested in connection with Sunday’sarrest of three suspected bookies from Kandivali, who were allegedly using the portal to accept bets. Dadhia will be produced in court on Wednesday.

Sources said Dadhia claims he launched the website in December last year and more than a dozen important bookies in Mumbai had subscribed to it. Police hope Dadhia’s interrogation will provide leads about other bookies operating the business in Mumbai.

On Sunday evening, the property cell of the Mumbai crime branch, raided Apartment 702 in Rock Avenue building, Kandivali (West) on information that some persons were accepting bets there for the IPL finals.

On reaching there, police detained three men Vishal Upadhyay, a resident of Charkop and Yasin Saed Sheikh & Abhishek Singh, both residents of Jogeshwari. They have been remanded to police custody.

Jeethu Dadhia will be produced in the court on Wednesday. Police said Jeetu is a key accused in the betting racket. “We will interrogate him to know who and how many bookies/punters have accounts in his circle and whether or not he was only into betting or went beyond that. We also want to to know the flow of money through hawala operators,” said Nandkumar Gopale, senior inspector of property cell.

The Mumbai crime branch found out that bookies had launched two websites, namely ‘kkhelmasti‘ and ‘Vbet24‘, which were used to place bets and settle accounts as there was a danger of phone calls being intercepted.
