The global pandemic has made the future of cricket uncertain. The hosting of two big shows Indian Premier League 2020 and ICC T20 World Cup 2020 is under dilemma. BCCI’s apex council member Anshuman Gaekwad has said IPL could only be hosted if ICC postpones the mega event. The T20 World Cup is scheduled in October in Australia.
“IPL can happen, but it depends on India’s condition”
Gaekwad informed that BCCI is finding a window to host the 13th edition of IPL. Most probably, the Board is expecting to organize the lucrative league in September and October, but the schedule will clash with the ICC’s mega event. He further added that India’s condition due to virus would also play a significant role in hosting the league.
“I have my doubts that T20 WC will be held this year. About IPL, we cannot think of just now. It will depend on Indian conditions and the window is only during this T20 WC which is October-November,” Gaekwad told ”PTI-Bhasha”.
“If the World Cup gets cancelled or postponed, then only IPL can happen but then also it depends on what the conditions are in India,” he said.
Cricket might take three to four-month to resume: Gaekwad
The former Indian coach believes post-COVID-19, cricket would be approached differently. Spectators would bot be allowed, and many rules would also change.
“Cricket is not going to be the same, the approach would be different. There will be no crowd in the stadiums. Cricketers are not used to play in empty stadiums. It will be one very difficult aspect of playing new type of cricket, “Gaekwad said.
He also said that India would have to wait for four months to resume cricket because nothing is going as planned.
“It may take another two months or four months or more to resume cricket. It is not theory that you can read and write. You have to perform so nothing is going to be easy,” he said.
