IPL FINAL: All Three Titles Are Special And Result Of Hard Work Rohit Sharma

A dream come true, a new record and lots of emotions – that’s how to describe the win last night for Mumbai Indians.

Mitchell Johnson took 3/26 to guide Mumbai Indians to the IPL 2017 title – their third in Indian Premier League history. The Aussie fast bowler produced a brilliant performance in the final over as MI completed a narrow victory over Rising Pune Supergiant.

Steve Smith’s 50-ball 51 went in vain as they lost wickets in a heap towards the end. Earlier, Jaydev Unadkat and Dan Christian bowled brilliantly to restrict Mumbai Indians to 129/8 against Rising Pune Supergiant. Krunal Pandya was the top-scorer for MI with a 38-ball-47.

In one of the closest finals in 10 editions, the trio of Jasprit Bumrah (2/26 in 4 overs), Mitchell Johnson (3/26 in 4 overs) and Lasith Malinga (0/21 in 4 overs) were brilliant at the death defending a lowly total of 129/8 as Supergiant were restricted to 128 for 6 at the end.

It was Johnson, who kept his nerve during the final over where 11 runs were needed.

Manoj Tiwary smacked the first one to mid-wicket boundary bringing the equation down to 7 from 5 balls.

However, the next two deliveries turned out to be a disaster with both Tiwary and skipper Steve Smith (51, 50 balls) were caught in the deep.

With four required off final ball and 3 for a Super Over, Dan Christian went for an impossible 3rd run only to be run out as Mumbai players celebrated like never before.

Credit should also be given to Bumrah and Malinga for giving away only 10 runs between them in the 17th and 18th over which suddenly increased the pressure.

Rohit Sharma, the MI captain, praised the trio of Lasith Malinga, Johnson and Jasprit Bumrah for delivering under pressure and observed that the team turned the virtues of hard work and resolve into a winning combination.

He said ,

“All three titles are special. All three titles… like the first one in 2013, 2015 against the same opposition [CSK] that we played in 2013. I personally feel it is how you prepare at the start of the tournament, getting your combinations right and going on to the field. That’s the most critical part of winning the tournament. Individual brilliance can win you a few games, but what is required to win this championship is team unity, teamwork and intelligence.”

According to Rohit, it’s the team hard work and to play as a unit that has worked wonders over the years. For him, a teamwork leads to a championship. He also signed the fact that none of his batsmen was on top five but he seemed content with the bowling nd team performance his youngsters gave.

“If you look at the first two titles we won, we probably had one batsman in the top five. We didn’t have one batsman in the top five this time. That’s a little bit sad, but that shows different individuals have stepped up at different times and taken up responsibility. They’ve put their hands up and performed. That is the hallmark of this team, especially this year. We’ve never relied on one individual to win us the game. Today was a perfect example. Bowling unit came in together. (There are a) few youngsters and inexperienced players and few legends in our bowling unit. It was a combination of both, and we gelled nicely.” said the Blue-army skipper.

Rohit also spoke about how they took to defend such a low total.

“When you are playing on a slow pitch, it’s important to believe you can defend any target when you are fielding. After our poor batting display, we spoke about how we played our last game against one of the better batting units in the tournament – KKR – and bowled them out for 107. Why can’t we do it here? That was the thought here. Of course, the guys knew the challenge but rose up to the occasion.”

He also spoke on his likeliness to captain for India in T20 when he said,”That’s thinking too far ahead. I don’t think too far ahead. When the opportunity comes, it comes. I will grab it with both hands.”
