Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson said that the way Chennai Super Kings (CSK) back their player is incredible. As he is set to play the third season for CSK, he opined that he is fortunate to play for them in the past two editions.
Shane Watson has played for Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore before shifting his base to CSK in 2018. It was the comeback season for the franchise returning after a two-season ban owing to the 2013 IPL spot-fixing saga. His attacking batting in the grand finale against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018 guided the CSK to their third IPL title triumph. The flamboyant batsman had amassed 117* runs in that marquee clash.
In the last edition as well, Shane Watson had played a blistering knock of 80 runs against Mumbai Indians in the grand finale. But unfortunately, CSK lost that match by just one run.
Recalling his journey with the team, he said that the 2018 season was one of his better seasons. He expressed that any team would have dropped him after he had a series of low scores in the 2019 edition, but CSK backed him. He was amazed to see the support he got from the franchise.
“The 2018 season was one of my better seasons, it wasn’t just the final [where Watson made a match-winning century]. But last year, certainly CSK stuck with me through thick and thin,” Watson told Quetta Gladiators’ head of player acquisitions, Nabeel Hashmi in a YouTube show.
Watson added that only world-class leaders have the quality to stick with the potential players even though they are struggling to score runs. And, he found that kind of support from CSK.
“In every other team that I’ve been in, I may have been dropped a couple of games before I got the runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Just them backing me, knowing my next few good innings were around the corner, [was amazing]. Only world-class leaders will really stick by and have the confidence to do that, given the calibre of the players we’ve got.
He has learned from the three-time IPL winners to have faith and believe in someone’s ability and back them as much as possible.
“That was a great learning for me as well, to be honest, to show that if you believe in someone, you believe in their ability, because you’ve seen what they’ve been able to do time and time again and that they will come good at some stage,” Watson added.
I am fortunate to play for CSK: Shane Watson
Noting that CSK is an incredible franchise, he revealed that when he used to play for the Royals, he used to admire Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni for the way they carry the team.
“CSK had full faith in me, they’re an incredible franchise to play against. When I played for Royals against Chennai, I always admired Stephen Fleming, and MS as well, the way he carried himself on and off the field.
Shane Watson has a special experience to see the Chennai-based franchise being run incredibly well from top-down. He feels to be fortunate to be the part of CSK which has a great supporting system.
“To be able to play at CSK and experience the way the franchise is run incredibly well from top-down was a very special experience.
“I do feel fortunate to have this part of my career of the IPL in the last few years, to play for a franchise that looks after everyone so unbelievably well,” Watson said.
Meanwhile, CSK will play the much-awaited tournament opener against Mumbai Indians scheduled on 19th September.
