IPL2016: Kings XI Punjab vs Rising Pune Supergiants – Match in Numbers

Mohit Camma / 17 April 2016

MS Dhoni won the toss for Rising Pune Supergiants and chose to bat. Supergiants were yet to get their combination right and as a result, Dhoni made three changes in the team.

As Supergiants came in to bat, Sandeep Sharma from Kings XI got a good start as he picked up Ajinkya Rahane early. Pietersen and Steve Smith got good starts but couldn’t capitalize. Faf du Plessis stayed on the one end and scored a fighting half century on a hot day. At the end of 20 overs, Supergiants scored 152 at the loss of 7 wickets with du Plessis scoring 67 runs. Mohit Sharma was the pick of the bowlers, he picked up 3 wickets in 4 overs.

The total wasn’t big but Kings XI had to bat well to reach the target (which they previously hadn’t). They did exactly that as Vohra and Vijay scored 97 for the first wicket. Middle order disappointed yet again as they lost 3 quick wickets after that. But a quickfire 32 (14 balls) from Maxwell ensured a comfortable 6 wicket win in the end for the Kings XI.

Here are some important numbers/record from this match –

9th season, 6th team – We are into the 9th season of IPL and if you thought Parthiv Patel and Aaron Finch are the only two players to represent 6 Franchise team, you are wrong. Thisara Perera, playing for Supergiants, became the third player in IPL history to represent 6 franchise teams. He has previously played for – CSK, KTK, MI, SRH, KXIP and now RPS.

Sharma’s day out – In today’s match, we had 4 Sharma’s playing today. Ishant Sharma and Ankit Sharma from RPS and Mohit Sharma and Sandeep Sharma in KXIP.

150+ score without a Six – As Supergiants scored 152. This is the first time in the history of IPL that team has scored more than 150 runs without hitting a single six.

Highest opening partnership – Manan Vohra and Murali Vijay have put up an opening stand of 97 runs. This is the highest opening partnership in IPL 2016 so far. They bettered the previous best of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa of 92 a day before.

Long Journey ahead – After performing well in the 2014 season of IPL, Manan Vohra didn’t get many chances in the previous season. In the match against Supergiants, Vohra scored his second 50. His previous fifty came in 2014 against Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals.

Openers strike – Both openers – Manan Vohra and Murali Vijay hit a fifty in this match. This was the 5th time in the history of IPL that both openers have hit a 50.

Ashwin Strikes – Yes, Ashwin strikes 3 wickets in this match but it’s not Ravichandran Ashwin but the youngster Murugan Ashwin. M Ashwin has 6 wickets in this IPL and is tied on top. A big boost for a youngster.

Maxwell strikes form – Maxwell who had scored 32 runs in his previous 6 innings at Mohali, scored 32 off 14 balls in today’s’ match. We can say that Maxi is striking form a good news for Kings XI dug-out.
