It was my fault, says Dhoni

Certainly, the skipper of Chennai Super Kings MS Dhoni is hugely disappointed with his team’s bowling performance during CSK’s six-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians in match 43 of the Indian Premier League 2015. He has concluded that bowling young Pawan Negi in the 19th over was a tactical error.

In that otherwise important match, CSK had done well to hold Mumbai Indians after they attempted hard to chase of 159. With 30 runs required in the last two overs, Dhoni chose to bowl left-arm spinner Negi, who had, till then given away just ten runs in his first three overs. But this particular decision made by Dhoni backfired as Mumbai Indians’ 21-year-old all-rounder Hardik Pandya smashed three sixes off Negi to turn the game in his team’s favour. Although Pawan Negi conceded 25 runs in that over but Dhoni has defended the youngster saying that he was forced to bowl him at such a crucial juncture in the match.

Dhoni said, “To some extent I was pushed to take that decision (on giving Negi the 19th over). Our fast bowlers didn’t bowl well today. Mohit went for runs, Nehra went for runs, so I was forced to make that decision. It was a tactical error in the end. No worries, it is good exposure. The fast bowlers need to step up. Yes, we have the purple cap, but we still need to improve,”

On a different note, CSK were unstable in the field as well with Faf Du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja droppping easy catches in the deep. A concerned skipper, Dhoni added, “It is bound to happen, it is such a long tournament. It was one off day in the field. It is important to win games and especially the ones like these, but it happens, you lose some close ones”.

However, it is important to highlight that despite a poor show in his 19th over, Pawan Negi had contributed by scoring 35 runs in just 17 balls. We must admire the stand taken by MS Dhoni, who perhaps knows Negi has a long way to go and hopefully he will be emerging as a star capable of displaying his skills in an equally good manner with the bat and the ball in the times to come. The encouragement by Dhoni is really appreciable.
