Justice Vikramajit Sen Defers Gautam Gambhir’s Four Match First-Class Ban For Two Years

In what comes as a big relief for Delhi Ranji Captain Gautam Gambhir, Justice Vikramjit Sen has deferred Gambhir’s ban for next two years, should he accept this order and do not repeat this mistake again. In a statement issued by Justice Sen, he has mentioned that it was not apt to give any ruling during the Indian Premier League and thus, the decision over the matter was delayed.

The committee to investigate the matter under Justice Sen was formed on March 14, which called up both Gambhir and coach KP Bhaskar for the first hearing. As per the statement issued, here are points put forward by both the parties –

KP Bhaskar – Bhaskar, in his submission,  has mentioned that his appointment has not come good with Gambhir. Narrating the confrontation incident with him, he said that he was called in the dressing room by the Ranji skipper of Delhi, who was not even playing the match due to fever.

After calling him inside, Gambhir asked three of the young players to go out and then vented his anger towards him, using abusive language. As per Bhaskar, the left-handed even went towards him in agitation, before being stopped by few other members of the side.

Bhaskar further blamed Gambhir for not taking him into confidence before the games and selection meetings, favouring members of his club in the team. He added that Gambhir was dropped from the captaincy for the Vijay Hazare games on his advice, to manage the team but it did not have any effect as he still had so much control, without even being the skipper of the side.

Gautam Gambhir – In reply to Bhaskar’s allegation, Gautam Gambhir replied that coach KP Bhaskar drew a bridge with him on the first day, when the first time he called him for the meeting ahead of the season contacting him through a journalist, which skipper found highly unprofessional. He accepted that he had an argument with the coach but did not use any foul and abusive language. He claims to request the coach for a discussion on 6th March, where he denied coach’s claim of using foul language.

Gambhir further alleged Bhaskar to be playing with the careers of youngsters, whom he wanted to drop after just a few bad performances. He also added that the coach did not conduct team meetings, which was demoralising and discouraging for members of the side.

After hearing to both the parties, Justice Sen asked them to present any witness on the table, which both of them denied and the plea from both sides was submitted in one hearing

Findings  –

  1. In it’s finding, the committee has concluded that the relationship between both the members has not been genial right from the day Bhaskar was appointed as the coach of the side.
  2. Gautam Gambhir had an ugly confrontation with the coach and it was Bhaskar who was taking it from Gambhir after he sent out three of the players out from the dressing room.
  3. The actions of Gautam Gambhir were not in the spirit of the game. The position of a coach in the dressing room is an elevated position and his actions towards coach were inappropriate,
  4. Committee raised a doubt whether the news of confrontation was leaked by Bhaskar in media as it was the same journalist who reported the matter, whom Bhaskar asked to convey a meeting with Gambhir for the first time. However, this blame was denied by Bhaskar saying that Gambhir was shouting so loudly that his voice could have been heard outside as well.
  5. Both did have odd relations, which was first created when Bhaskar called Gambhir for a meeting through a journalist.

Recommendations – The committee of four members viz. Justice Vikramjit Sen, Madan Lal (Chairperson), Rajendra S. Rathore (Member) and Soni Singh (Member) after the hearing pleas of both the parties, recommended a ban on four games for the upcoming season, which was deferred by Justice Sen should Gambhir accept the order and do not commit the same actions again.

Committee also recommended formulation of rules where disciplinary actions should be taken against a player in case of any of the actions from his side against the spirit of the game.
